Experiment 13-Lewis Structures
Prelab: Draw Lewis dot diagrams for the following molecules.
N2
CH4
C2H6
C2H4
C2H2
CO3-2
Materials: Atom model kits
Hypothesis: Can you predict the molecular structure and shape of a molecule from the formula?
Procedure:
For the compounds given, complete the tables for each of the following:
a. Lewis dot structure.
b. Shape (geometry) around the central atom. If there is more than one central atom, given the
shape around each central atom. Sometimes each central atom may have the same shape (as in
H2O2) or they may have different shapes (such as in C3H60).
c. Bond angles for each of the central atoms.
d. Is the molecule polar or non-polar?
e. Build a molecular model of each compound and show it to your instructor, who will check the
last box. Once you have a molecule checked off, break it apart to use the pieces for other
molecules.
f. Draw a picture showing the 3 dimensional structure of the molecule.
