You are NOT allowed to use ANY written material, including booklets, pamphlets, and trifold brochures that came with your Mineral / Rock ID kit. You may use calculators (NO cell-phone!) and ALL the tools from your Mineral / Rock ID kit! You may also use the samples from your Mineral / Rock ID kit as long as: • there is NO writing on rocks or minerals such as numbers or samples pasted on labels • NO minerals or rocks are sorted into compartment boxes • OK with multiple specimens in Ziplock bags as originally packaged in your Mineral / Rock ID kit 1. Be able to identify all of the rocks found in your Mineral / Rock ID kit from unknown hand samples using the mineral ID techniques and testing materials of your kit without the aid of written materials! Be able to describe each of the rocks listed above using observations and a hand lense and applying the appropriate geologic terminology. See table for examples: Igneous Rocks Sedimentary Rocks Metamorphic Rocks aphanitic, phaneritic, porphyritic, felsic, mafic, intermediate, intrusive, extrusive, volcanic, plutonic, etc.... fine-grained, medium grained, coarse grained, conglomeritic, siliceous, carbonaceous, clastic, chemical, rounded, well rounded, angular, subangular, well sorted, poorly sorted, fossiliferous, laminated, massive, etc.... foliated, non-foliated, slaty, phyllitic, schistose, gneissic, high metamorphic, low metamorphic, coarse, fine, garnet bearing, etc.... Be able to determine rock densities accurately using the pen scale from your Mineral / Rock Kit. 5. Additional requirements for each rock type: Igneous Rocks Sedimentary Rocks Metamorphic Rocks Be familiar with the mineral composition of common igneous rocks. Be able to classify sedimentary rocks according to the Wentworth Scale! Also, be able to distinguish clastic from chemical or biological sedimentary rocks. Which metamorphic rocks form from which protolith under what condition? Be familiar with Bowen’s Reaction series in interpreting mineral associations Be able to estimate the environment of deposition for sedimentary rocks! Be able to identify minerals in metamorphic rocks Be able to identify minerals in igneous rocks Be able to use grainsize, sorting, and roundness on terrigenous sediments in interpreting transport history. Be able to identify minerals in sedimentary rocks 6. Be able to sort various igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks into their proper plate tectonic setting.
