This workshop provides participants with a broad overview of how petrochemical products are commercially transacted/traded and
taught through usage of multiple case examples.
The dynamics of the global petrochemical industry are changing rapidly and in profound ways. There is more volatility in the markets
and many industry participants are adjusting towards J.I.T. sales and purchase agreements in this new paradigm. A good
understanding of the petrochemical markets and how the various elements of feedstock, basic petrochemicals and derivatives interact
and affect each other is essential for industry participants. This course puts all these in perspective and highlights contract structures
and the commercial risk elements involved.
Participants will leave the workshop armed with the knowledge and insights to make good decisions and effectively equipped with the
skills to mitigate their future commercial risk exposure to protect industry and/or trading margins.

The Global Economic Outlook – Pro-growth Populism or Protectionist Populism?
The political earthquakes of 2016 have upended conventional thinking about the global economy and have—ironically—brightened
the outlook. The expectation that the incoming Trump administration will enact sizeable fiscal stimulus has increased optimism about
US and global growth. This, in turn, has pushed US stock indexes to record highs, while pushing up both interest rates (with a
resulting rout in the bond market) and the dollar. A stronger dollar is mostly good news for Europe and Japan, but bad news for
emerging markets. IHS Markit believes that the balance of these trends will be moderately positive for global growth, which is
expected to increase from 2.5% in 2016 to 2.8% in 2017 and 3.1% in 2018. Unfortunately, political and policy uncertainties (and risks)
are higher now than they were a year ago. The rise of anti-globalization movements in the United States and Europe could result in
policies that hurt growth. In particular, a trade war could push the US and global economies into recession. On the other hand,
business-friendly policies (including lower corporate taxes and a roll-back of regulation) could boost both short-term and long-term
growth. Based on recent statements by President-elect Trump, his advisors and Congressional leaders, IHS Markit believes that the
latter scenario is more likely than the former.

Naphtha & Octane Need Gasoline
Propane and naphtha are in the state of oversupply where most regions can get all the volume that they can structurally process. As a
result, prices have been low and arbitrages for marginal trade routes have been closed for majority of 2016. IHS Markit doesn’t expect
that crude prices will be able to significantly increase during 2017, keeping propane and naphtha prices in competition. With ethane
and propane replacing naphtha in steam crackers, gasoline has until recently remained the last bastion of significant naphtha demand
and price support. However, very low octane values and slow growth in the aromatics demand do not signal much stronger naphtha
prices in 2017.

Global Phenolics: The Dynamic Static Market
Global phenolics will be challenged in 2017 as new capacity comes online in Saudi Arabia and India, adding to already oversupplied
markets. Why will capacity be added in different corners of the world and what does it mean for existing producers as well as
downstream consumers? Producers will strive for any advantage relative to their competitors and supply customers at adequate
margins. However, phenol will be plentiful and its co-product, acetone, with its inability to keep pace with propylene, is creating a
further drag on profitability. Along the chain there are varying dynamics which will result in changing global trade flows while
challenging the supply demand fundamentals.

Global Chlorine Market, Recovery Now?
Historical chlorine demand growth is characterized by a boom and bust cycle that tracks the growth rate of global GDP closely.
Typically, demand would rebound immediately after every decline in growth and this cycle seems to repeat itself every 6 to 8 years.

Ethane in NGL Separation – to Reject or to Recover?
The competitive NGL-based feedstocks have spurred a new wave of investment in ethane-based ethylene production in North
America, including seven expansion projects of existing crackers, six new steam crackers under construction, and eight crackers in
feasibility stage. These new projects require additional ethane supply of about 11 million tons of ethane by 2018 and another 11.1
million tons beyond 2018 for the eight crackers in the feasibility stage. Whether the midstream companies will be able to meet this
growing demand depends on pipeline availability, exports, and most importantly NGL separation and fractionation economics. This
presentation examines the ethane separation economics to determine when a midstream company will reject ethane (including it with
methane for fuel use) or recover it as a petrochemical feedstock to get an assessment of future supply-based techno-economics
analysis.

The Dynamics of Global Plant Construction Location Factors
In discussions with IHS Markit clients in recent years, one of the topics that they bring up most frequently has been the rapid change
in relative construction cost levels between different locations. Much of this cost fluctuation can be attributed to recent wide swings of
exchange rates for most global currencies, but other factors such as labor rate changes, are also impactful. In light of this, IHS Markit
developed a methodology to independently calculate and update our country location factors to reflect the ongoing reality in relative
capital costs and cost competitiveness.
