This document replaced the Articles of Confederation.
The United States Constitution was written to solve the
problems that were caused by the weak government under
the Articles of Confederation.
Based on the idea that the authority (power) of the
government comes directly from the people.
Preamble tells the major goals of the Constitution:
to establish justice,
to ensure peace,
to defend the nation,
and to protect the people‛s well-being and liberty.
Governing powers are shared between the states and the
federal government.
Three branches of government were established:
the executive,
the legislative,
and the judicial.
Each branch will have certain powers and duties.
The United States Constitution provides a balance of power
so that no one branch becomes too strong.
George Washington and many other delegates signed the
Constitution.
