What is a storage Device?
• A storage device is a device used for storing
something.
Types of Storage Devices
1. Optical
Eg.
•
BLU Ray
•
Compact Disks – CD-ROMS ; CD-R; or CD-RW
•
DVD’s
2. Magnetic
Eg
•
Hard Disks
•
Magnetic tape
•
Floppy
3. Solid State
Eg.
• External Hard Disks
• Camera Card
• USB’s
Optical Storage Devices
Uses A Precise laser Beam
BLU Ray
• Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp,
Sony, TDK and Thomson). The format was
developed to enable recording, rewriting and
playback of high-definition video (HD), as well
as storing large amounts of data.
Compacts Discs
• A Compact Disc (also known as a CD) is an
optical disc used to store digital data.
DVD’s
• A DVD is a larger, faster CD that can hold
video, audio, and/or computer data.
Magnetic Storage
Uses a Magnet Medium
Hard Disks
• The hard disk drive is the main, and usually
largest, data storage device in a computer.
• It is inside the computer
Magnetic Tape
• Magnetic tape is an external storage device
that can be used for making copies of audio,
video, and data.
Floppy
• A floppy disk is a data storage medium that is
composed of a disk of thin, it is in a square or
rectangular plastic shell.
• It cannot contain as much data a CD or DVD or
a Hard disk
Solid State Storage Devices
Uses electronic circuits that retain the values without any power
source
External Hard Drive
• An external hard disk drive is a type of hard
disk drive which is connected from the outside
to a computer
An external hard disk drive is a type of hard
disk drive which is externally connected to a
computer
Camera Card (SD Cards)
• They look like tiny pieces of plastic with 5
metal contacts and will come in capacities
ranging from 128mb to 8 gb.
USB’s
• A USB flash drive consists
of flash memory data
storage device integrated
with a USB (Universal
Serial Bus) 1.1 or 2.0
interface. USB flash
drives are typically
removable and
rewritable, much smaller
than a floppy disk, and
most weigh less than
1 ounce
