Genesis 18:20-19:29
“The Sin of Sodom and
Gomorrah”
Genesis 18:16-19
“Should I hide my plan from Abraham?”
Genesis 18:20-22
20
So the LORD told Abraham, “I have heard a
great outcry from Sodom and Gomorrah,
because their sin is so flagrant. 21 I am going
down to see if their actions are as wicked as
I have heard. If not, I want to know.” 22 The
other men turned and headed toward
Sodom, but the LORD (“YHWH”) remained
with Abraham.
Genesis 10:19 (NASB95)
The territory of the Canaanite extended from
Sidon as you go toward Gerar, as far as Gaza; as
you go toward Sodom and Gomorrah and
Admah and Zeboiim, as far as
Lasha.
15:16
“for the iniquity
of the Amorite is
not yet complete.”
Genesis 13:13 (NASB95)
Now the men of Sodom were
“wicked exceedingly”
(break, smash, crush into pieces)
and “sinners” against the LORD.
(morally guilty, to miss, to offend)
Ezekiel 16:49 (NASB95)
“Behold, this was the guilt of your sister
Sodom: she and her daughters had
arrogance, abundant food and careless
ease, but she did not help the poor and
needy. 50 “Thus they were haughty and
committed abominations before Me.”
Genesis 18:23-33
“Will you sweep away both the righteous
and the wicked?...
Surely you wouldn’t do such a thing,
destroying the righteous along with the
wicked…
Should not the Judge of all the earth do
what is right?...
“Then I will not destroy it for
the sake of the ten.”
James 1:17 (NASB95)
Every good thing given and every perfect gift
is from above, coming down from the Father
of lights, with whom there is no variation or
shifting shadow.
The LORD reigns forever; he has
established his throne for judgment. 8
He will judge the world in
righteousness; he will govern the
peoples with justice.
Psalm 9:7–8 (NIV84)
Genesis 19:1-2
1
That evening the two angels came to the
entrance of the city of Sodom. Lot was
sitting there, and when he saw them, he
stood up to meet them. Then he welcomed
them and bowed with his face to the
ground. 2 “My lords,” he said, “come to my
home to wash your feet, and be my guests
for the night. You may then get up early in
the morning and be on your way again.”
“Oh no,” they replied. “We’ll just spend the
night out here in the city square.”
3 But Lot insisted, so at last they went home
with him. Lot prepared a feast for them,
complete with fresh bread made without
yeast, and they ate.
Genesis (NASB)
13:12-13 Abram settled in the land of
Canaan, while Lot settled in the cities of the
valley, and moved his tents as far as Sodom.
Now the men of Sodom were wicked
exceedingly and sinners against the LORD.
14:12 “he (Lot) was living in Sodom. This is
where Lot chose to live, knowing that the
people were given to evil.
Psalm 1:1–3 (NASB95)
How blessed is the man who does not walk
in the counsel of the wicked, Nor stand in
the path of sinners, Nor sit in the seat of
scoffers! But his delight is in the law of the
LORD, And in His law he meditates day and
night. He will be like a tree firmly planted by
streams of water, Which yields its fruit in its
season And its leaf does not wither; And in
whatever he does, he prospers.
Genesis 19:4-5
4
But before they retired for the night, all the
men of Sodom, young and old, came from all
over the city and surrounded the house. 5
They shouted to Lot, “Where are the men
who came to spend the night with you?
Bring them out to us so we can have sex
with them!”
Romans 1:32 (NLT)
“…Worse yet, they encourage others to do
them, too.”
Romans 1:26–27 (NASB95)
For this reason God gave them over to
degrading passions; for their women
exchanged the natural function for that
which is unnatural, 27 and in the same way
also the men abandoned the natural
function of the woman and burned in their
desire toward one another, men with men
committing indecent acts and receiving in
their own persons the due penalty of their
error.
Leviticus 18:22 (NASB95)
You shall not lie with a male as one lies
with a female; it is an abomination.
“exceedingly wicked”, “immoral”, an
“abomination”, “going after strange
flesh”, “ungodly”, “poison”, “arrogant”,
“rebellious”, “un-natural”, “a degrading
passion”, “indecent” and
“as deserving judgment”.
Mark 7:21-23 (NKJV)
"For from within, out of the heart of men,
proceed evil thoughts, adulteries,
fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness,
wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye,
blasphemy, pride, foolishness. All these evil
things come from within and defile a man."
1 Corinthians 6:9–11 (NASB95)
Or do you not know that the unrighteous
will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not
be deceived; neither fornicators, nor
idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor
homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous,
nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers,
will inherit the kingdom of God. Such were
some of you; but you were washed, but you
were sanctified, but you were justified in the
name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the
Spirit of our God.
2 Peter 2:7–8 (NASB95)
“…righteous Lot, oppressed by the sensual
conduct of unprincipled men 8 (for by what
he saw and heard that righteous man, while
living among them, felt his righteous soul
tormented day after day by their lawless
deeds…”

"Germans! Defend yourselves!
Do not buy from Jews"
Genesis 19:6-9
6
So Lot stepped outside to talk to them,
shutting the door behind him. 7 “Please, my
brothers,” he begged, “don’t do such a wicked
thing. 8 Look, I have two virgin daughters. Let me
bring them out to you, and you can do with
them as you wish. But please, leave these men
alone, for they are my guests and are under my
protection.” 9 “Stand back!” they shouted. “This
fellow came to town as an outsider, and now
he’s acting like our judge! We’ll treat you far
worse than those other men!”
Genesis 19:9-11
And they lunged toward Lot to break down
the door. 10 But the two angels reached out,
pulled Lot into the house, and bolted the
door. 11 Then they blinded all the men,
young and old, who were at the door of the
house, so they gave up trying to get inside.
Genesis 19:12-13
12
Meanwhile, the angels questioned Lot.
“Do you have any other relatives here in the
city?” they asked. “Get them out of this
place—your sons-in-law, sons, daughters, or
anyone else. 13 For we are about to destroy
this city completely. The outcry against this
place is so great it has reached the LORD, and
He has sent us to destroy it.”
Romans 1:28–31 (NASB95)
“And just as they did not see fit to
acknowledge God any longer, God gave
them over to a depraved mind, to do those
things which are not proper, 29 being filled
with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed,
evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit,
malice; they are gossips, 30 slanderers,
haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful,
inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31
without understanding, untrustworthy,
unloving, unmerciful…”
Genesis 19:14-16
14
So Lot rushed out to tell his daughters’
fiancés, “Quick, get out of the city! The LORD
is about to destroy it.” But the young men
thought he was only joking. 15 At dawn the
next morning the angels became insistent.
“Hurry,” they said to Lot. “Take your wife
and your two daughters who are here. Get
out right now, or you will be swept away in
the destruction of the city!”
Ephesians 4:17–19 (NLT)
With the Lord’s authority I say this: Live no
longer as the Gentiles do, for they are
hopelessly confused. 18 Their minds are full
of darkness; they wander far from the life
God gives because they have closed their
minds and hardened their hearts against
him. 19 They have no sense of shame. They
live for lustful pleasure and eagerly practice
every kind of impurity.
Genesis 19:16-17
16
When Lot still hesitated, the angels seized
his hand and the hands of his wife and two
daughters and rushed them to safety
outside the city, for the LORD was merciful. 17
When they were safely out of the city, one
of the angels ordered, “Run for your lives!
And don’t look back or stop anywhere in the
valley! Escape to the mountains, or you will
be swept away!”
Romans 12:2 (NASB95)
And do not be conformed to this world, but
be transformed by the renewing of your
mind…” Do we love God or the easy
comfortable culture we live in?
1 John 2:15
Do not love the world nor the things in the
world. If anyone loves the world, the love of
the Father is not in him.
Revelation 18:4–5 (NASB95)
I heard another voice from heaven, saying,
“Come out of her, my people, so that you
will not participate in her sins and receive of
her plagues; 5 for her sins have piled up as
high as heaven, and God has remembered
her iniquities.
Genesis 19:18-23
18
“Oh no, my lord!” Lot begged. 19 “You have
been so gracious to me and saved my life,
and you have shown such great kindness.
But I cannot go to the mountains…
21 “All right,” the angel said, “I will grant your
request. I will not destroy the little village. 22
But hurry! Escape to it, for I can do nothing
until you arrive there.”…23 Lot reached the
village just as the sun was rising over the
horizon.
Genesis 19:24-26
24
Then the LORD rained down fire and
burning sulfur from the sky on Sodom and
Gomorrah. 25 He utterly destroyed them,
along with the other cities and villages of
the plain, wiping out all the people and
every bit of vegetation. 26 But Lot’s wife
looked back as she was following behind
him, and she turned into a pillar of salt.
Luke 9:62 (NASB95)
But Jesus said to him, “No one, after putting
his hand to the plow and looking back, is fit
for the kingdom of God.”
Luke 17:26-33
28
“And the world will be as it was in the
days of Lot. People went about their daily
business—eating and drinking, buying and
selling, farming and building—29 until the
morning Lot left Sodom. Then fire and
burning sulfur rained down from heaven and
destroyed them all…32 Remember what
happened to Lot’s wife! 33 If you cling to
your life, you will lose it, and if you let your
life go, you will save it.
Genesis 19:27-29
27
Abraham got up early that morning and
hurried out to the place where he had stood
in the LORD’s presence. 28 He looked out
across the plain toward Sodom and
Gomorrah and watched as columns of
smoke rose from the cities like smoke from a
furnace. 29 But God had listened to
Abraham’s request and kept Lot safe,
removing him from the disaster that
engulfed the cities on the plain.
Jude 7 (NASB95)
just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities
around them, since they in the same way as
these indulged in gross immorality and went
after strange flesh, are exhibited as an
example in undergoing the punishment of
eternal fire.
Deuteronomy 29:23 “…the overthrow of
Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim,
which the LORD overthrew in His anger and
in His wrath.”
1 Timothy 2:1–6 (NIV84)
I urge, then, first of all, that requests,
prayers, intercession and thanksgiving
be made for everyone— 2 for kings and
all those in authority, that we may live
peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness
and holiness…
3
This is good, and pleases God our
Savior, 4 who wants all men to be saved
and to come to a knowledge of the
truth. 5 For there is one God and one
mediator between God and men, the
man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as
a ransom for all men—the testimony
given in its proper time.
