CCSS to PARCC Update Fall 2013 Recapping Common Core • Announced in 2009 and adopted by 45 states and DC • In fall 2011, NJ began implementation in K-2, 2012 3-12 ELA and 35,9-12 2013 all grades ELA/Math • Fall 2014: Full implementation expected in all participating states Adopted Not adopted Purpose and Objective CCSS “To ensure all students are prepared for success after graduation, the Common Core State Standards establish a set of clear, consistent guidelines for what students should know and be able to do at each grade level in math and English Language Arts to ensure they are prepared for success after graduation. The standards have been adopted by over 40 states.” Teacher Support National online survey of 20,000 K12 teachers by Scholastic found: • 77% of math and/or ELA teachers said the standards will have a “positive” or “very positive” impact • 12% said the impact would be “neither positive or negative” Teachers praise new standards for • 10% “don't know enough to say” classroom learning • 1% said the impact would be negative This does not mean that implementation will be easy. 3 What Change will Bring What PARCC promises for our students • • • • Results available in 1-2 weeks First optional test diagnostic Same test across states Mobility The Why • Students are not being prepared for college and careers • Current standards are too low • Current tests do not measure essential skills • Current tests provide little value to teachers, students, parents, and postsecondary leaders Why new Assessments 1. Package deal: Along with Common Core standards, new tests will better prepare students for college and careers/life after high school 2. Higher quality: New assessments are superior to the old “bubble tests” 3. Teacher-friendly: Reflecting great teaching with timelier results (data to inform instruction) Old vs. New Assessing different knowledge Present State Writing Prompt • • • Read the writing prompt below and complete the writing activity: Jump out of bed! Look out the window! It is a perfect weather day! Write a story about a day when the weather seemed perfect PARCC Writing Prompt • • • • You have read two texts about famous people in American history who solved a problem by working to make a change Write an article for your school newspaper describing how Eliza and Carver faced challenges to change something in America In your article, be sure to describe in detail why some solutions they tried worked and others did not work Tell how the challenges each one faced were the same and how they were different Old vs. New High School Math Previous Math Question • • If 3(y-1) = 8, then what is y? This question is an example of solving equations as a series of mechanical steps CCSS Math Question • • What are two different equations with the same solution as 3(y-1) = 8? This question is an example of solving equations as a process of reasoning Key Issues (cont’d) New Scores • More challenging • More accurate • More honest One Approach “The Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers represents a fundamental shift in how we think about student testing, state-to-state. PARCC is based on the belief that standardized tests should not be about penalizing educators, students and schools. Instead, tests should be tools to help improve teaching and learning. The PARCC assessments are carefully crafted to give teachers, students, schools, and parents better information on how we are preparing our kids for careers and college — and life.” Valley Strategies • Curriculum for ELA and Math re-written – Started in Sept 2010 – Continuing to update and revise • All ELA/Math teachers assembled for intro • Regular updates to superintendents and principals • Continuous contact with NJ DOE and PARCC through the PARCC ELC 12 Continuing Professional Learning • • • • New Teacher Academy ELA/Math planned department activities ELA/Math instructional coaches School based meetings and support for lessons and units • Workshops through the NVCC 13 NVCC Professional Learning • 45 Workshops in this year’s offerings 14 Resources and Learning nvcc.nvnet.org 15
