DEFINE THE RELATIONSHIP
THE COST OF BEING A DISCIPLE
LUKE 9:23-27
23 THEN HE SAID TO [THEM] ALL, “IF ANYONE
WANTS TO COME WITH ME, HE MUST DENY
HIMSELF, TAKE UP HIS CROSS DAILY, AND FOLLOW
ME. 24 FOR WHOEVER WANTS TO SAVE HIS LIFE
WILL LOSE IT, BUT WHOEVER LOSES HIS LIFE
BECAUSE OF ME WILL SAVE IT.
Luke 9:23-24
25 WHAT IS A MAN BENEFITED IF HE GAINS THE
WHOLE WORLD, YET LOSES OR FORFEITS
HIMSELF? 26 FOR WHOEVER IS ASHAMED OF ME
AND MY WORDS, THE SON OF MAN WILL BE
ASHAMED OF HIM WHEN HE COMES IN HIS GLORY
AND THAT OF THE FATHER AND THE HOLY ANGELS.
Luke 9:25-26
27 I TELL YOU THE TRUTH: THERE ARE SOME
STANDING HERE WHO WILL NOT TASTE DEATH
UNTIL THEY SEE THE KINGDOM OF GOD.”
Luke 9:27
WHAT HAS FOLLOWING
JESUS COST YOU?
A DISCIPLE PUTS GOD’S WILL FIRST
• A DISCIPLE MUST DENY HIMSELF.
• MAN'S TENDENCY IS TO INDULGE HIMSELF.
• THE BELIEVER IS TO DENY HIMSELF BY SUBMISSION TO THE
THINGS OF GOD.
A DISCIPLE TAKES UP THE CROSS OF CHRIST
• THE CROSS DOES NOT MEAN MERELY BEARING ONE'S
PARTICULAR HARDSHIP IN LIFE
• THERE IS A DOUBLE MEANING IN "TAKE UP THEIR CROSS."
– IT MEANS TO FOLLOW JESUS TO THE DEATH IF NECESSARY.
– IT ALSO MEANS TO DIE TO SELFISH DESIRES AND AMBITIONS
A DISCIPLE TAKES UP THE CROSS OF CHRIST
• THE CROSS DOES NOT MEAN MERELY BEARING ONE'S
PARTICULAR HARDSHIP IN LIFE
• THERE IS A DOUBLE MEANING IN "TAKE UP THEIR CROSS."
• DYING TO SELF:
– MEANS BEING DEAD TO SIN
– MEANS ALIVE TO GOD
– MEANS SUBMISSION TO GOD
A DISCIPLE TAKES UP THE CROSS OF CHRIST
• THE CROSS DOES NOT MEAN MERELY BEARING ONE'S
PARTICULAR HARDSHIP IN LIFE
• THERE IS A DOUBLE MEANING IN "TAKE UP THEIR CROSS."
• DYING TO SELF.
• THIS IS NOT A ONCE-FOR-ALL DEAL.
A DISCIPLE MUST FOLLOW JESUS
• MAN'S TENDENCY IS TO FOLLOW SOMEONE ELSE AND TO
GIVE ONE'S FIRST ALLEGIANCE TO SOMETHING ELSE.
• FOLLOWING JESUS MUST BE CONTINUAL.
• FOLLOWING JESUS DOESN'T MEAN WALKING BEHIND HIM,
BUT TAKING THE SAME ROAD OF SELF-DENIAL AND SELFSACRIFICE.
• JESUS IS CALLING YOU TODAY TO FOLLOW.
