 Was a famous novelist and social crusader from




California.
He had a variety of interests for lots of topics.
He Pioneered the kind of journalism known as,
“muckraking.”
He wrote a famous novelist called ‘’The Jungle.”
According to “The Baltimore Literary Heritage
Project,” He was referred to “The King of Muckrakers”
 Upton Sinclair was born in Baltimore on the 20th of
September, 1878.
 Him and his parents were not wealthy people , and
with his fathers alcoholic problem they moved to New
York in 1888.
 According to Spartacus Educational, “although his
parents were extremely poor, he spent periods of time
with his wealthy grandparents.”
 He exposed the unsanitary conditions in the meat
packing industry.
 Because of him meat, medicine and food products are
now labeled so that people can know what is in the
food.
 He influenced many people with his famous novel
“The Jungle.”
 He ran for governor of California in 1934 and was
nearly elected but there was a 2 minute political errors
in the judgment.
 He decided to put off his plan in favor of the president
Roosevelt’s National Solution for Social Insurance
System.
 Food poisoning and diseases.
 An example of this ,Upton’s book “The Jungle,” helped
people realized how blood, from the meat industry,
was going into the water supply and causing diseases.
 Another reason was because people did not know
what was being put in the meat if something that
wasn’t meat would get chopped up and put in the cans
the workers wouldn’t know.
 Upton died at the age of 90 in November,25 1968 in
Bound Brook, New Jersey due to old age.
 Upton Sinclair helped people realize how what the
meat and drug industries were doing was wrong.
 Because of him meat, drug and food industries make
sure to always add a label so that everyone can know
what the product contains(better conditions.)
 He helped make sure that factory workers
(immigrants) were at safety as well as public safety.





