Types
 There are 4 major types of stages for the theatre, with
slight variations
 Proscenium (like our stage)
 Thrust (or 3 Quarter Stage)
 Arena (or In-The-Round)
 Flexible Stage
Proscenium Stage
 The Proscenium stage is like our PAC
 It resembles a picture frame, called the arch
 There is usually a traditional backstage area.
Thrust Stage
Also called Three Quarter Stage
 The audience is positioned on 3 sides of the stage.
In-The Round
 Also called Arena theatre, the audience is all around
the stage, with entrances and exits being possible from
multiple places.
Flexible
 Can be used for many genres of theatre and does not
have to take place in a traditional theatre.
 Some examples are dinner theatre and guerilla theatre,
where the play is not performed in a traditional stage.
 The space can conform to the needs of the
play/theatre troupe.
Traverse
 This is a variation, where the audience is on two sides
of the square.
