GENE MUTATIONS
Target: I will be able to identify the main types of gene
mutations and predict the effects of point and frame shift
gene mutations on the organism.
Mutation: A sudden change in the structure or the
.amount of genetic material.
Some have no effect.
Some are beneficial
Some are harmful
Pg. 101
Gene Mutation: a change
that affects the genes on a
chromosome.
Types of Mutations:
1. Point Mutation: a
mutation that affects no
more than one nucleotide
in the gene.
The substitution of one
nucleotide for another
which affects the
protein that is made.
Effects: 1. Some code for the same protein.
2. Some code for a different amino acid, which
changes the protein.
3. Some produce a nonsense protein that doesn’t
get made.

Frameshift Mutation: a
gene mutation that
involves the insertion or
deletion of a nucleotide.
Effect: Usually causes
no protein to be made.

Frameshift Mutation:
Draw an example of an insertion, then write the effect that
this mutation has on the resulting protein.
Frameshift Mutation:
Draw an example of a deletion, then write the effect that
this mutation has on the resulting protein.
