• The Napoleonic Wars had turned the country from thoughts of
revolution to the need to defeat the French.
• there was no longer such need for factory-made goods
• 300 000 men from Britain’s army and navy were looking for work
• landowning farmers’ income had suffered because of cheaper
imported corn
• The general misery began to cause trouble.
Whig reforms of the 1830s
• The Whig Party recovered its strength and
unity by supporting moral reforms
• The Whigs became champions of
Parliamentary reform.
• They made Lord Grey prime minister
• the Reform Act of 1832 became their
signature measure
• In 1832 Parliament abolished slavery in the
Empire with the Slavery Abolition Act
