The Respiratory System
 Takes in oxygen
 Gets rid of carbon dioxide
 Air travels in through your
mouth and into your lungs
 Red blood cells pick up
the oxygen
 Red blood cells move
through your body, pick
up carbon dioxide, back to
lungs
 Diaphragm pushes carbon
dioxide out of your body
Larynx
 Also known as the
voice box
 Contains the vocal
chords
 Where the sound is
made from the air
breathed in and out
Trachea
 Also known as the
windpipe
 Filters the air we
breathe in
 Leads into the
bronchi, then into
the lungs
Bronchi
 One tube goes into
the right lung and
one goes into the
left lung
 These tubes
subdivide into
bronchioles
Bronchioles
 The smallest
subdivisions of the
bronchi
 About 30 000 of
them inside each
lung
 About as thick as a
strand of hair
Alveolus
 A very small air sac
 It is inside of the
lung
 The air breathed in
goes into these air
sacs
Lungs
 Two lungs located
in your chest
 Large and take up
most of the space in
your chest
 Enable you to
breathe oxygen into
your body and
exhale other gases
Diaphragm
 It is a dome-shaped
muscle
 Enables you to
breathe in by
moving downward
 Enables you to
exhale by moving
upward
