WARM UP
Based on what you know
about the urinary system,
predict how urine is made.
Urinary System
• Is also called the excretory system
• Removes waste materials from your body
– Waste leaves the body in the form of urine
• Is made up of 2 kidneys, 2 ureters, bladder
and urethra
Kidneys
• They are essential in the urinary system
• Help maintain homeostasis
• Filter the blood and remove waste
– Waste is sent to the bladder
• In producing urine, the kidneys excrete
wastes such as urea and ammonium
Ureters
• Muscular ducts (tubes) that move urine
from the kidneys to the bladder
Bladder
• The urinary bladder is the organ that
collects urine excreted by the kidneys
before disposal by urination.
• A hollow, muscular and elastic organ
Urethra
• Duct (tube) that leads urine from the
bladder to the outside of the body
Where does the waste come from?
• In the digestive system, the large intestine
absorbs excess fluid to leave behind a solid, dry
substance.
• The fluid that is absorbed goes into the blood
stream.
• Your blood carries around the excess fluid until it
gets to the kidneys.
• The kidneys then filter out the excess fluid your
body doesn’t need, along with other waste
materials.
• The excess fluid is drained down the ureters into
the urinary bladder.
