Bringing Clean Water to Developing Countries Jacqui Kulwin The Problem • More than a billion people in the world do not have access to clean water • It is a world wide problem affecting at least 20% of the world’s population; especially in Sub Saharan Africa and South Asia – 1 in 4 children die before age 5 worldwide as a result of water related diseases – Half of the world's hospital beds are filled with people sick from unclean water – It's most often women and young girls who walk miles every day to collect dirty water to drink. – A child dies every 15 seconds from a lack of clean water • Many other problems are perpetuated by a • • • • lack of water in poor countries Poverty If the only source of water, dirty or not is miles away, people must spend their energy retrieving water leaving no time to work and earn money Hunger water is necessary to grow, store, and cook food Education no longer a priority without access to clean water Disease lack of or unclean water is one of the leading preventable causes of death in the world • HIV/Aids: people with a weakened • immune system due to AIDS have a harder time fighting off the bacteria found in unclean water Infant Mortality: infants and young children are more susceptible to diseases. Each time you use any water (to brush your teeth, shower, wash dishes) drop some change into the jar. It could be just pennies. Once the jar is filled donate it to help bring water to those who need it – One of the biggest problems holding back the ability to have clean mater available is money to build wells and adequate water supplies
