Bringing Clean Water to
Developing Countries
Jacqui Kulwin
The Problem
• More than a billion people in the world do not have access to clean
water
• It is a world wide problem affecting at least 20% of the world’s
population; especially in Sub Saharan Africa and South Asia
– 1 in 4 children die before age 5 worldwide as a result of water related
diseases
– Half of the world's hospital beds are filled with people sick from unclean
water
– It's most often women and young girls who walk miles every day to
collect dirty water to drink.
– A child dies every 15 seconds from a lack of clean water
• Many other problems are perpetuated by a

lack of water in poor countries
Poverty If the only source of water, dirty
or not is miles away, people must spend
their energy retrieving water leaving no time
to work and earn money
Hunger water is necessary to grow, store,
and cook food
Education no longer a priority without
access to clean water
Disease lack of or unclean water is one of
the leading preventable causes of death in
the world
• HIV/Aids: people with a weakened
•
immune system due to AIDS have a
harder time fighting off the bacteria
found in unclean water
Infant Mortality: infants and young
children are more susceptible to diseases.
If clean water is provided to a community
the infant mortality rate can drop by as
much as 50%

Organizations
• Ethos: partnered with Starbucks. 5 cents from every bottle sold
goes to providing access to clean water; want to raise 10 million by
2010, have 6.2 million in grants
• African Well Fund: 10 miles in her shoes raises money to build
clean wells to provide water for villages in Africa
• Tap Project: through UNICEF. Restaurants started charging for tap
water, and using the money to provide clean water
• Piati Restorante and Bar, Faz Restaurant, Bridges ,Basil Leaf Café,
•
Uptown Café, The peasant and the pear, Alamo Café, Bagel Street
Café, Don Jose’s Mexican Restaurant

Solution
• Promote awareness make people
aware of small things they can do
(tap project, ethos) to make a
difference
• Change for water keep a jar in each
bathroom, kitchen and any other
place water is used. Each time you
use any water (to brush your teeth,
shower, wash dishes) drop some
change into the jar. It could be just
pennies. Once the jar is filled donate
it to help bring water to those who
need it
– One of the biggest problems holding
back the ability to have clean mater
available is money to build wells and
adequate water supplies
