ANTHRAX BACILLUS ANTHRACIS A LOOK UP CLOSE • Bacteria • Rod Shaped • Gram Positive • 9 micrometers long SYMPTOMS CUTANEOUS ANTHRAX INHALATION ANTHRAX •Small blisters and/or •Fever and chills •Confusion or dizziness •Extreme tiredness blisters •Painless black skin ulcers surrounded by swelling GASTROINTESTINAL ANTHRAX •Nausea and bloody vomiting •Bloody diarrhea •Fainting •Swelling of abdomen LIFE CYCLE • Anthrax stays dormant in soil or on grass until eaten by large herbivores • Once the animal dies anthrax can be spread through direct contact of the animal, eating the animal, or in some cases the anthrax goes airborne and can infect through the respiratory system • About 100-200 people die each year TREATMENTS • Antibiotics successfully cure about 99% for cutaneous anthrax, 55% for inhalation anthrax, and 60% for gastrointestinal anthrax INTERESTING FACTS • Anthrax has been used as a biological weapon in 2001
