Space Tools 8-4.10 FS Standard 8-4.10 Compare the purposes of the tools & the technology that scientists use to study space. Use of Space Tools • How do astronomers use space tools & technology to learn about space? • to make observations • to collect data about objects in & outside of the solar system • to analyze & interpret the data Telescopes • 2 Types of Optical • Refracting: uses convex lenses Telescopes: • Reflecting :uses mirrors • Both collect visible light & use their particular tools to focus the light to produce larger, brighter images of distant space objects • Radio Telescopes • receive radio waves emitted from objects in space, including waves from very distant stars & galaxies used anytime, in any weather Other telescopes • How are other telescopes different from optical & radio telescopes? • other telescopes “read” infrared or xray signals • they have to be placed where Earth’s atmosphere doesn’t block or absorb the signals Satellites • placed in orbit around Earth • have special instruments & telescopes that collect information from space • data is sent back to Earth where it is interpreted • data is not hampered (bothered) by Earth’s atmosphere Space Probes • travel out of Earth’s orbit to explore places that would be too dangerous for astronomers • contain instruments to collect data • the instruments a probe contains depends on the mission Spectroscopes • collect light from distant stars • separates the light into bands of different colors • astronomers study the bands to identify the elements of a star
