Order of Operations
Rules that tell you which
operations to do first
Variable
A letter that represents a number
EXAMPLE: In 3 + a = 15, “a” is
the variable.
TERMS
Parts of an expression separated
by an operation sign
EXAMPLE: In 3a + 7, “3a” and “7”
are terms
CONSTANTS
Numbers, or quantities, that do
not change
EXAMPLE: In 4 + b, “4” is a
constant
COEFFICIENT
A number that multiplies a
variable
EXAMPLE: In 3a, “3” is the
coefficient
LIKE TERMS
Terms that have the same variables
with the same exponents
EXAMPLE: In 3a + 4 + 2a, “3a” and
“2a” are like terms
SUBSTITUTE
Replace a variable with a number
expression
3a + 6 = y
a=3
EQUATION
A statement that two expressions
are equal
EXAMPLE: 3a + b = 12 is an
equation
Expression
a group of terms (the terms are
separated by operation signs)
3a + 5b + 7
