What are landforms?
• Landforms are the natural
shapes or features called
landforms.
• There are many different
types of landforms found
on the earth.

Atoll
• A ring of coral
that forms an
island in an
ocean. The
coral sits on
top of a
volcanic cone.
Archipelago
A group or
chain of islands
clustered
together
Bay
A body of
water
partially
enclosed by
land. It is
smaller than a
gulf.
cape
• A pointed
piece of
land that
sticks out
into the
sea.
cave
• A large hole in
the ground or
in the side of a
hill or
mountain
channel
• A body
of water
that
connects
two
larger
bodies of
water.
Cove
• A small
horseshoe
shaped body of
water along the
coast. The
water is
surrounded by
land.
Canyon
• A deep valley
with very
steep sides,
often carved
by a river.
Delta
• A triangular
shaped area
formed by
the deposits
of silt from a
river.
Dune
• A hill or ridge
of sand fomed
by the wind. It
is always
changing.
Estuary
• Where a
river
meets the
ocean.
The
water
here is
brackish.
Geyser
• A natural hot spring
that occasionally
sprays water and
steam above
ground.
Glacier
• A longlasting,
slowly
moving river
of ice on
land.
Isthmus
• A narrow
strip of land
connecting
two larger
landmasses. It
has water on
two sides.
Marsh
• A type of
wetland
found along
rivers, ponds,
and lakes.
Marsh plants
grow out of
the water.
Peninsula
• A body of land
surrounded by
water on three
sides.
Tributary
A smaller
river that
enters a
larger
river
Volcano
• A mountainous
vent in the
earth’s crust.

the area
where the
ocean
touches
the land.
desert
A desert is
a hot dry
place with
little or no
rainfall.
river
A river
is a long
flowing
body of
water.
