HOMEWORK:
31, 2012
- Chapter 5 Homework Packet (due Monday,
Nov. 5)
-“A Closer Look at Land Biomes” Worksheet
(due Fri., Nov. 2)
- “A Closer Look at Water Biomes” Worksheet
(due Mon., Nov. 5)
-Read Chapter 5, Lessons 5 and 6 (to be ready
for class tomorrow)
WARM UP:
Please sit quietly and show me you are
ready for some oral review (and deeper
thought mind-teasers!!!!).
Shhhhhhhh!!!!
• A little bit of review:
– What is an ecosystem?
All the living and non-living things in an area.
– How is an ecosystem similar to your body’s
digestive system?
An ecosystem and your digestive system are made
up of parts that work together to meet the needs of
all parts. If one part of your digestive system fails,
the rest of the system operates poorly. If one part
of an ecosystem fails, the rest of the system
operates poorly.
Review…..continued!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
– What might happen to the animals in a
deciduous forest if Winter lasted year round?
Some animals would have trouble surviving the
continuous cold. The food and water available
might not be enough to sustain all animals.
– If no rain falls in a particular habitat for several
years, how might the populations in the
habitat reorganize themselves to remain
balanced?
Some organisms might leave the habitat because of
less food or water. Other organisms might not
survive.
Today’s Goal:
• SWBAT demonstrate the ability to describe
characteristics of different water biomes
and ecosystems by completing a
reference worksheet giving characteristics
and pictures of each biome.
• MAKE IT A DART-FREE DAY OR NOT…..
» THE CHOICE IS YOURS!!!!!!!!!!
Water Biomes
• The two true “Water Biomes” are:
– Freshwater Biome
– Saltwater (Marine) Biome
• Within the fresh and salt water biomes,
different ecosystems can be found:
• Freshwater Biome:
– Lake/Pond Ecosystem
– River Ecosystem
• Streams, brooks, true rivers
– Wetland Ecosystem
• Swamps, marshes, bogs, estuaries, sloughs
• Saltwater Biome (Marine Biome):
– Coral Reef Ecosystem
• The “Rainforests of the Oceans” – most diverse
water ecosystem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
– Wetlands
– Deep Sea Ecosystem
• A journey into the great unknown…..we have
better maps of some parts of the Moon than of
some of the world’s ocean trenches
River Ecosystem
-River ecosystems have flowing water –
generally freshwater
-Speed of flowing water varies
-Water temperatures vary from cold as ice
(melting glacial streams) to warmer. Even
warm rivers are usually cooler than standing
water ecosystems
-Some coastal rivers may be brackish (i.e.
saltwater/freshwater mix – like rivers around
Shanghai)
-Plants and animals vary from river to river
depending on water speed and temperature
Fish
Atlantic Salmon
– cold water
Catfish
– warm
water
Large Mouth Bass –
warm to cool water
Beaver – warm to cold, but not
tropical
Water Snake – generally
warmer water
Red Spotted Newt –
warmer water
Snapping Turtle – warm water
Crayfish – warmer water, but some
can tolerate cool to cold water
Lamprey – cold water parasites!!!!!
Wetland Ecosystem
• Ecosystem that is partly covered with water or is
flooded at least part of each year.
• Salt or Freshwater
• Generally quite warm – but some are cold (cold
Northern bogs)
• Water is generally, but not always, slow moving
or stagnate
• Plant and animal life varies with temperature
• -Ex. Florida Everglades, Swamps, Marshes,
Estuaries, peat bogs in Ireland and the United
Kingdom (cold)
Wetland Animals
Deer –
warm to
cold
Alligator - warm
Frogs - warm to
moderately cool
Otter – warm to cold
depending on species
Wetland Plants – warm to cool
Emergent - Cattail
Floating leaved
Scrub Shrub - Buttonbush
Submerged
Floating
Tree – Sycamore – this is a warm swamp
Mangrove
swamps –
tropical….hot!!
Bring your
towel to wipe
off the
sweat!!!!!!!
SALT WATER
Coral Reef Ecosystem
Coral reefs are the hard skeletal parts left
from dead coral, the animal is the coral
polyp inside
Coral reefs are “The Rainforests of the
Oceans” – most diverse aquatic
ecosystem
Coral reefs are tropical and sub-tropical only
(WARM WATER!!!!!!!)
Coral
Polyps
Pineapple Coral
Sun Coral
Coral
Reef
Different colors due to algae
Table Reef
Clownfish and Sea Anemone
Deep Sea
• Cold and dark; very high pressure (will
smash you flat as a pancake)
• Saltwater
• NO LIGHT!!!!!!!!
• “Marine Snow”
Gulper Eel
-Jaw unhinged in order to
swallow its prey whole
-Grow 2-6 feet in length
Angler Fish
- They are known for
having a “fishing rod”
that’s tipped with a
fleshy bait, which is
usually luminous
Viperfish
-Sharp, fang-like teeth don’t even
fit in its mouth, impaling its victims
as it swims by at high speeds
-Has light organs on its sides to
attract smaller fish
Giant Tube Worms
-Live near deep sea hydrothermal vents
-They can grow up to 8 feet tall; some grow about 33 in/year
Giant Squid!!!!!
The world’s largest known
living animal
Originally thought to have gone extinct 65 million
years ago, this is one of the oldest known fish still
living….
Coelacanth
Closing it up…
• With your FACE PARTNER, discuss what
you think the most awesome water
ecosystem that we talked about today was.
