MECHANICAL AND MAGNETIC
ENERGY
Description
Mechanical Energy
Magnetic Energy
 The energy is associated with
the motion of objects.
Mechanical energy is
transferred from one object
to another.
 Measured in joules or footpounds.
 For example when a hammer
hits a nail mechanical energy
is transferred form the
hammer to the nail.
 Mechanical energy is a
renewable resource.
 The Energy required to set
up a magnetic field.
Magnetic energy is used in x
rays, visible light and others.
When electrical currents
associate with magnetic
fields magnetic fields create
an electrical current.
 Magnetic energy is a
renewable resource.
History and Discovery
Mechanical Energy
 Mechanical energy has been
around since the 18th century.
It was found when the people
discovered that they could
convert heat into mechanical
energy. When they found this
they had more possibilities
for doing work.
 The term mechanical energy
was first used by William
Rankine in 1859.
Magnetic Energy
 Magnetic energy was
discovered about five
thousand year ago in
China. It was discovered
when its magnetic force
pulled iron objects.
 It helped people navigate
because it always pointed
north because of the earths
magnetic field.
Stored and Released
Mechanical Energy
 Pumped hydroelectric
storage (PHS)
 Compressed air energy
storage (CAES)
 Flywheels- a flywheel first
begins to spin at a very high
speed, the energy is now
considered rotational energy.
When the flywheel begins to
slow down it is changed back.
Magnetic Energy
 Magnetic energy is stored
in SMES (Superconducting
Magnetic Energy Storage),
they are in magnetic fields.
 SMES magnetic energy is
released after the DC
power in changed back into
AC power.
 Magnetic energy is
released with flares.
Below- a super conductor.
Today
Mechanical Energy
 Mechanical energy is all
around us. It is in windmills,
vehicles, roller coasters,
generators, and many other
places.
 Mechanical energy isn't just
machines we use it all the
time. When people lift
weights they use mechanical
energy.
 Remember mechanical
energy is the ability to do
work.
Magnetic Energy
 Magnetic energy is used in
generators, medical uses, and
other things.
 Magnetic energy is used in
MRIs.
 Magnetic energy is released
in solar flares.
 The
picture
shows a
solar flare.
Advantages and Disadvantages
Mechanical Energy




Advantages
One of mechanicals energy’s
ad vantages is the flywheels,
the flywheels have a long life
span.
Not always difficult to use.
Mechanical energy is a
renewable resource.
Disadvantages
The flywheels have power
loss faster than batteries.
Magnetic Energy




Advantages
One of magnetic energy’s
advantages are it SMES, one
reason is that it has power
available instantaneously.
Other uses than just energy
Magnetic energy is a
renewable resource.
Disadvantages
The SMES systems may have
technical trouble with cold
temperatures.
Economic Impact
Mechanical Energy
 Mechanical energy's
economic impact depends on
the machines and storage
costs.
 A flywheels produces enough
energy to supply 1,000
households a year, that’s 1.8
mega watts.
 It takes about 6 to 8 months
for flywheels to pay back the
energy used to run it.
Magnetic Energy
 The SMES caused many
companies and industries
to save a tremendous
amount of money.
 Paper Industry
 Motor Vehicle Assembly
 There are also others but
between these places they
have saved an average of
$15,000-$50,000
Environmental Impact
Mechanical Energy
Magnetic Energy
 Mechanical energy is
environmentally
friendly energy source.
 Environmental friendly
and Highly efficient.
 Mechanical energy
machines put off some
pollution
energy has any
negative impacts on
the environment
 I don’t think magnetic
Future
Mechanical Energy
 An object’s speed, elevation
and mass can have an effect
on the magnitude of where
the mechanical energy
machines are. The faster an
object moves or the greater
its mass or height, the greater
the amount of energy it can
produce.
 Devices that can directly use
mechanical energy are being
made.
Magnetic Energy
 The iri (future energy program)
have projects they wish to
complete these projects
 Magnetic Energy Converter
(MEC)
 Hartman Project,
Inhomogeneous Magnetic Fields
 Dense Plasma Focus Fusion, all-
magnetic motor project
 Electromagnetic Earthquake
Prediction
Interesting Facts
Mechanical Energy
 Mechanical Energy is
stored energy.
 You use mechanical
energy when you lift
weights and hammer
nails.
Magnetic Energy
 Magnetic energy is
used in therapy to heal
people.
 Wii remote charger
stands generate
magnetic energy.
