Do Now: How did the initial drop height change the bounce height? Which ball bounced the highest? Bouncy Ball Lab Due TOMORROW What is temperature? Is temperature the same thing as heat? Video Clip Thermometer Demo! Temperature is a measure of how “hot” or “cold” something is. Temperature is measured in arbitrary units, like Fahrenheit, Celsius or Kelvin. Temperature is proportional to the average kinetic energy of the molecules of the substance. T = ½ 2 mv Temperature is therefore proportional to the speed of the molecules of a substance. Velocity or speed T 2 = ½ mv Tv The higher the temperature, the greater the average speed of the molecules. Brain Pop: Temp. Velocity or speed T 2 = ½ mv Tv Heat is the thermal energy transferred from a hot object to a cold object. Heat is measured in energy units -Joules or calories. Heat always moves from a warmer place to a cooler place. Hot2Cold Song Hot objects in a cooler room will cool to room temperature. Cold objects in a warmer room will heat up to room temperature. If a cup of coffee and an ice cream cone were left on the table in this room what would happen to them? Why? The cup of coffee will cool until it reaches room temperature. The ice cream will melt and then the liquid will warm to room temperature. The heat transferred is proportional to the mass of the object, the specific heat capacity of the object and the temperature change the object undergoes. Specific heat capacity the amount of heat needed to raise one gram of a substance by one Celsius degree It’s a measure of how much heat something can “hold” Specific heat capacity varies from one substance to another
