Self Expression
Self expression is an idea or an emotion in a art work that someone expresses. When
someone paints, draws, or sculpts, their looking forward for other people to have an idea
or to show others how they are feeling.
Time Period: This was painted in 1893
Artist was Edvard Munch. He was born in 1863 in Norway. The Scream is one of the most
recognized works in the history of art he did.
This painting is called Starry Night, 1893 oils on canvas. In this painting the night
landscape represents the coastline at Asgardstrand, a small beach resort south of Oslo
Norway where Munch spent his summers there since the 1880s.
I think this was painted because he wanted to try to capture the emotions called forth by
the night.
Applied Art
Applied arts have designs or decoration of an object that looks very interesting to people .
It pleases someones eyes because they discover something new about it and it interests
them maybe because of its pattern, color or even texture.
Time Period: This was made in 1920
Artist was named Maria Martinez, who is known for the wonderful black on black pottery
that she and her husband Julian became most famous for.
This art was called PolyChrome Pot in which the term polychrome refers to multicolor
painted pot. Maria Martinez was very crafty and she loved to use her imagination to create
patterns.
I think that what she painted on the pots was a way of showing others that panting, or
making sculptures doesn’t always have to be in patterns. She wanted to show that having
different ideas in art can change people’s mind about just regular art.
Fine Art
Fine arts are a visual arts created primarily for aesthetic purposes specifically, painting,
sculpture, drawing, graphics, or architecture.
Time Period: 1969
This was made by Elizabeth Catlett who has maintained a deep belief in the democratic power
of printed art to reach a large audience.
This art was called Malcolm X Speaks Fore Us in which Catlett uses her art to advance causes
of particular interest to her, including the African-American experience and the difficulties of
lower classes.
I think she made this painting because she wanted to show the beauty and dignity for black
people and any other people she loved and cared for . She had extreme patriotism for her own
country and everyone that she loved. As she says and I quote “I am inspired by black people
and Mexican people, my two peoples.” “ My art speaks for both my people.”
