Internet safety
Why do we need internet
safety?
• We all have laptops with access to the
internet
• We can find all kinds of information about
anything online. But how about information
about yourself and others?
• How does it make you feel to know that
basically anyone in the WORLD can obtain
your personal information?
• Not every stranger has your best will in mind
when it comes to privacy.
Protection on MySpace
• It is the largest online social networking portal on the
web
– It has 61 + million registered users
– It's the second largest destination on the web, by page views
• Teens have established significant presence on
social networking web pages:
– 61% of 13- to 17-year-olds have a personal profile on a site
such as MySpace, Friendster, or Xanga.
– Half have also posted pictures of themselves online.
• Have a private profile?
– any MySpace visitor or user can see your personal
information such as where you live, how old you are, and
your picture.
Instant Messaging
• Instant Messaging is defined by Wikipedia as
a form of…communication between two or
more people based on typed text. The text is
conveyed via computers connected over a
network such as the Internet.
• From Wiki:
– AIM: 53 million active, and more than100 million
total users as of January 2006
• That a lot of people you can talk to! Including online
predators.
Chat Rooms
• www.signals.co.uk/glossary/Searchglos
s.aspx defines a chat room as…
– Online forums where people can chat
using text based communication.
• This type of virtual communication is
best known for teenager’s contact with
predators.
The Reality of Online
Chatting
• A survey commissioned by Cox
Communications and NCMEC2 found that of
teenagers…
– 71% reported receiving messages online from
someone they don’t know.
– 45% have been asked for personal information by
someone they don’t know.
– 30% have considered meeting someone that
they’ve only talked to online
– 14% have actually met a person face-to-face they
they’ve only spoken to over the Internet (9% of 1315s; 22% of 16-17s).
Reality Cont.
• The survey also stated that….
• When teens receive messages online
from someone they don’t know, 40%
reported that they’ll usually reply and
chat with that person.
• Only 18% said they’ll tell an adult.

A true story

your decision to act responsibly and
safely while using the internet.
