The Scientific Revolution:
A revolution in thought
During the power point think about these questions as
you listen and complete your two column notes:
•What events contributed to the scientific revolution?
•What were some ideas that were important to new thinking?
•Who were important people in the Scientific revolution?
•How did thinking change as a result of the Scientific Revolution?
Old thinking
BEFORE the
scientific revolution:
The universe and the natural world are
created by God and knowable only
through the accepted teachings of the
church.
What is the Scientific
Revolution?
The Scientific Revolution
was a historic movement
that transformed the way
people thought about the
world.
New thinking
AFTER
the scientific revolution:
The universe and the natural world are governed
by natural mathematical laws
And could be known through the use of
observation,, reasoning and the scientific
method.
The Medieval World View was
based on
1. Ancient Greek Ideas that were thousands of
years old…
Aristotle: astronomy
Ptolemy: mathematics
Galen: biology and medicine
2. The accepted teaching of the Catholic Church
and the Bible.
How did Muslim and Jewish scholars
help to spur the Scientific
Revolution?
 Muslims and Jews
translated many ancient
Greek texts and
preserved them.
 Muslim Scholars made
many advances in
Mathematics.
 Trade provided European
scholars contact with a
variety of ideas about the
world
How did the Renaissance contribute?
Secularism
Individualism
Humanism
How did the Protestant Reformation
contribute to the Scientific
Revolution?
People questioned the teachings
of the Catholic church and it
diminished in influence in parts of
Europe.
Protestant churches were more
lenient with the new “scientific thinkers”.
How did European exploration help expand
scientific thinking?
 European explorers began to
discover new lands using new
technologies.
 Explorers discovered that there
were more than 3 continents on
Earth.
 Europeans then questioned the
traditional teachings about the
world.
A big shift in scientific thought
occurs
New technologies; like the telescope
and the microscope
Innovations in ways to seek knowledge
Like the scientific method
First they try understanding the Heavens
 Copernicus presents a heliocentric
model of the universe in 1543 but
most people reject it because if it is
true then everything they know
could be wrong.
 Tycho Brahe builds an observatory
and gathers data about the
movements of the planets
 Johannes Kepler uses Brahe’s data
to prove the heliocentric view and
establish that planets move in
elliptical orbits.
 Galileo Galilei assembles an
astronomical telescope and writes to
confirm heliocentric theory and he
accused of heresy by the Catholic
Church.
Then they create a Scientific Method
that starts a revolution in thought…
Rene Descartes
Sir Francis Bacon
believed ideas
based solely on tradition or
unproven
facts should be discarded.
We should
scientific method to make life
better.
believed that using
human reasoning was
the best way to
understand the world.
Doubt everything and
think.
“I think therefore I am”
Read…not to believe and
take for granted…
but to weigh and consider”
