Course Description: Chemistry 542 involves the application of physics and math to the
study of chemistry including quantum mechanics, spectroscopy, and statistical
mechanics.
Goals: Students will:
 develop an understanding of quantum mechanics and its application to atoms,
simple molecules, and spectroscopy
 develop an understanding of the basic concepts of statistical mechanics that link
individual molecular properties with bulk thermodynamic properties
 apply computer skills in solving problems, understanding concepts, and locating
resources
 communicate the concepts in this course through class discussions
Texts: Physical Chemistry, 9th Edition, Peter Atkins and Julio de Paula, W. H.
Freeman.(required)
Student’s Solutions Manual for Physical Chemistry 9th Edition, Carmen Guinta,
Charles Trapp, and Marshall Cady. (optional, on reserve in the library)
Attendance: Class attendance will be checked each class period. A student who is
absent is responsible for missed work.
Homework: Homework problems will be assigned for practice in applying concepts and
developing problem solving skills. Where appropriate, problems should be solved using
Excel or MathCAD. Students will present some homework problems in class. Some of
the homework assignments will be collected and graded.
Tests: Three tests will be given during the semester (see schedule for dates). If you
have to be absent on the day of a test, notify me as soon as possible. An opportunity to
make up a missed test will be given only for an unavoidable absence. The final exam
will be cumulative and will be given on Tues., Apr. 29, 11:30-2:30. The tests and final
exam will consist of a mixture of problems to solve and short answer and discussion
questions to test the understanding of concepts. The final exam grade will replace the
lowest test grade if it is to the student’s advantage.
Grades: Grades will be calculated as follows: class participation and homework 20%;
tests 55%; and final exam 25%.
Grading scale: A ≥ 90 > B+ ≥ 87 > B ≥ 80 > C+ ≥ 77 > C ≥ 70 > D+ ≥ 67 > D ≥ 60 > F
