Facts
• Perseus was one of the first heroes in
Greek Mythology.
• He was the son of Zeus and Danae.
• He was a smart and handsome young man
• King Acrisius of Argos put his only daughter,
Danae, in a tower to prevent her from having
children because the prophesy said that one day,
Danae’s son would one day kill him. She was
locked up for eighteen years until Zeus magically
appeared in a shower of gold. Zeus and Danae had
a baby.
Once Perseus was born, he and his mother,
were locked in a chest by the king and sent
to sea. They arrived safely on an island
called Seriphos.
A king named Polydectes heard about Danae
and wanted to marry her, but she rejected
him. The king knew that Perseus was on the
island and wanted to get rid of him so he
could marry Danae by force. So Polydectes
sent Perseus on a mission to bring back the
head of the gorgon, Medusa.
• The Gorgons did not have normal hair. They had
snakes, and worst of all they were so hideous,
that if you look into their eyes you immediately
turn into stone.
• On his way there, Perseus met Hermes the
messenger god, and Athena the goddess of
wisdom and battle. They gave him a sickle, a
shield to reflect the image of Medusa, and
winged shoes. They told Perseus to go to the
Nymphs of the North to get two more gifts.
• The Nymphs of the North kindly gave
Perseus the Cap of Darkness and a magic
wallet to put Medusa’s head in. They also
told him the way to the Gorgon’s lair.
Arrival
• Perseus found Medusa sleeping with her
sisters. Perseus cut Medusa’s head off and
put it in the magic wallet and flew off.
• His journey back home was adventurous.
He saved Andromeda, daughter of The
King Cepheus of Phoenicia from a sea
monster. In return, The King gave Perseus
his daughter’s hand in marriage
• When he returned with his new wife to Seriphos,

he turned King Polydectes into stone. Perseus
and Andromeda lived happily ever after.
Perseus was killed by Dionysus, god of fertility
and wine.
His descendants were heroes and kings, the
greatest of these was Heracles, the strongest
man in the world.
Perseus even has his own constellation.
• Perseid Meteor Shower represents the
time when Zeus, the king of the gods,
visited the Danae in a shower of gold.
