What is a pedigree
chart?
• Pedigree charts are used to show
records of families or individuals.
• They are used because breeding humans
is not possible. Shows ethical ways of
studying human genetics.
• Shows how possible conditions may be
inherited.
• Uses symbols to represent the
individuals and their relationships to
each other

• The half filled circles and squares
show the carriers of the disorder
• This shows that the
disorder/condition is carried by the
females but expressed in the males.
• This is called a Sex – Linked
condition.

generations – 20 people.

What is Hemophilia?
• Hemophilia is a condition when
blood can't clot properly, excessive
bleeding (external and internal)
occurs after any injury or damage.
• Symptoms include many large or
deep bruises, joint pain and
swelling, unexplained bleeding, and
blood in urine or stool.
Hemophilia
• The X and Y chromosomes are
called sex chromosomes. The
gene for hemophilia is carried
on the X chromosome.
Hemophilia is inherited in an Xlinked recessive manner.
