Introduction
 The Problem Observed
– One of the unique aspects of American
Christianity is the doctrine of total abstinence
from all alcoholic beverages.
– This doctrine was never part of the history of
the Christian Church in the East or in the West.
– It was unheard of in Europe, the Middle East,
the Orient, and Latin America until American
missionaries arrived.

6
Introduction
 The Problem Observed
– It arose during the beginning of the
20th century in sympathy with Carry
Nation’s movement to add an 18th
Amendment to the Constitution
prohibiting alcoholic beverages.
– Many Christian leaders actually opposed
prohibition as conflicting with Scripture.
– They warned it would cause many problems.

Bible Facts on Alcohol
On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of
Galilee. The mother of Jesus was there, and Jesus and his
disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the
wine ran out, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They don't have
any wine.”
Jesus said to her, “How does that concern us, woman?
My hour has not yet come.”
His mother told the servants, “Do whatever he tells
you.”
Now standing there were six stone water jars used for
the Jewish rites of purification, each one holding from
twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus told the servants, “Fill the
jars with water.” So they filled them up to the brim.

Bible Facts on Alcohol
Then he said to them, “Now draw some out and take it
to the man in charge of the banquet.” So they took it.
When the man in charge of the banquet tasted the water
that had become wine (without knowing where it had
come from, though the servants who had drawn the water
knew), he called for the bridegroom and said to him,
“Everyone serves the best wine first, and the cheap kind
when people are drunk. But you have kept the best wine
until now!” Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of
Galilee. He revealed his glory, and his disciples believed
in him. —John 2:1-11 (ISV)

Wisdom has built her house, she has hewn out her
seven pillars; she has prepared her food, she has
mixed her wine; she has also set her table; she has
sent out her maidens, she calls from the tops of the
heights of the city: “Whoever is naive, let him turn in
here!" To him who lacks understanding she says,
"Come, eat of my food, and drink of the wine I have
mixed. — Proverbs 9:1-5

Bible Facts on Alcohol
Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has contentions?
Who has complaining? Who has wounds without cause? Who
has redness of eyes? Those who linger long over wine, those
who go to taste mixed wine. Do not look on the wine when it
is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it goes down
smoothly; At the last it bites like a serpent, and stings like a
viper. Your eyes will see strange things, and your mind will
utter perverse things. And you will be like one who lies down
in the middle of the sea, or like one who lies down on the top
of a mast.
“They struck me, but I did not become ill; They beat me,
but I did not know it. When shall I awake? I will seek another
drink.” —Proverbs 23:29-35

• [An elder] must not drink excessively…
• Deacons… must not be… addicted to wine…
– Titus 1:7
• …an overseer… must not drink too much…
– Ephesians 5:18
• Stop getting drunk with wine, which leads to wild
living, but keep on being filled with the Spirit.

29
Bible Facts on Alcohol
 Paul tells believers not to let anyone judge
them about what they eat or drink.
– Colossians 2:16
• Therefore, let no one judge you in matters of
food and drink or with respect to a festival, a
new moon, or a Sabbath day.
 In other words, if a weaker brother tries to
lord it over your conscience, don’t let him
do it!

30
Bible Facts on Alcohol
 In reality, the strong brother is the one
whose conscience has been educated by the
Word of God so that he may eat and drink
what he wants.
– Romans 14:2, 10
• One person believes that he can eat anything,
while the weak person eats only vegetables.
• Why, then, do you criticize your brother? Or
why do you despise your brother? For all of us
will stand before the judgment seat of God.

31
Bible Facts on Alcohol
 The weak brother has an uneducated
conscience, so he feels guilty about a lot of
things which God never condemns in His
Word.
– Romans 14:3
• The person who eats must not despise the
person who does not eat, and the person who
does not eat must not criticize the person who
eats, for God has accepted him.

32
Bible Facts on Alcohol
 Paul tells the strong in the faith to bear with
the foolishness of the weaker brethren.
– Romans 15:1
• Now we who are strong ought to be patient with
the weaknesses of those who are not strong and
must stop pleasing ourselves.
 Thus the strong must never force the weak
in the faith to violate their conscience.

33
Bible Facts on Alcohol
 Thus if a weaker brother feels that eating
meat, drinking wine, going to the movies,
etc. violates his conscience, tell him to
follow his conscience.
– Romans 14
 This does not give the weak the right to lord
it over the strong. Paul forbids anyone to
judge others on such issues as food and
drink.

35
Bible Facts on Alcohol
 When in the presence of the weak, the
strong should not do those things which
would tempt the weak to violate their
conscience. (Romans 14)
 But when the strong are not in the presence
of the weak, they are free to do as their
conscience dictates. Thus the strong may
eat and drink what he wants in his own
home or in the presence of the strong.

You Were Born a Sinner
 All people are born sinners. We are all
unrighteous people.
– Romans 3:10-12
• As it is written, “Not even one person is righteous.
No one understands. No one searches for God. All
have turned away. Together they have become
worthless.”

47
Your Best Efforts Fail
 All people sin. Our best efforts will never
measure up.
– Romans 3:23
• … since all have sinned and continue to fall short of
God’s glory.

48
The Price of Sin is Death
 The price of sin is death.
– Romans 5:12
• Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one
man, and death through sin, so death spread to
everyone, because all have sinned.

49
Jesus Paid Your Debt
 Jesus paid your debt by dying in your place.
– Romans 6:23
• For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of
God is eternal life in union with Christ Jesus our
Lord.

50
Christ Died for You

and suffering so that you would not have to
suffer eternally.
– Romans 5:8
• But God demonstrates his love for us by the fact that
Christ died for us while we were still sinners.

– Romans 10:13
• For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will
be saved.”

52
Confess, Declare, Believe
 You must confess your sin, declare His
Lordship, and believe in your heart that God
raised Christ from the dead.
– Romans 10:9-10
• … if you declare with your mouth that Jesus is Lord,
and believe in your heart that God raised him from
the dead, you will be saved. For a person believes
with his heart and is justified, and a person declares
with his mouth and is saved.

53
Your Prayer for Salvation
 “Lord, Jesus, I know that I am a sinner and I
need you. I know that you paid the price for
my sins by dying on the cross. I ask that you
forgive my sins; and I receive you as my
Savior and Lord. I thank you for forgiving
my sins and giving me eternal life. Take
control of the throne of my life. Make me
the kind of person you want me to be.
Amen.”

54
Some Truths to Remember
 Remember these simple truths from God’s
Word:
– 1 John 1:9
• If we make it our habit to confess our sins, he is
faithful and righteous to forgive us those sins and
cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
– Romans 8:16
• The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we
are God’s children.

55
Some Truths to Remember
– Ephesians 2:8
• For by such grace you have been saved through
faith. This does not come from you; it is the gift of
God and not the result of works, lest anyone boast.
– Romans 8:18
• For I consider that the sufferings of this present time
are not worth comparing to the glory that will be
revealed to us.

56
Some Truths to Remember
– 1 John 5:13
• I have written these things to you who believe in the
name of the Son of God so that you may know that
you have eternal life.
– 2 Corinthians 5:17-18a
• Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new
creation. Old things have disappeared, and—look!—
all things have become new! All of this comes from
God, who has reconciled us to himself through
Christ…
