Prepared by: Leah P. Escoreal Christine Jade T. Divinosa Unit Summary In this unit, students will explore what makes a society function. Students will recognize that each individual contributes to the success or failure of a society. This unit will broaden the student’s knowledge of current events and challenge students to make a difference in their classroom, community, and world. CFQ’s Essential Question: What makes a Society Survive and Function? Unit Questions: Who makes up a Society? How is a Society comprised? What are your contributions to Society? Content Questions: What is a Society? When was the first organized Society formed? Learning Objective The student will understand their personal role in society and become mindful that their actions, beliefs, personal experiences, culture, and choices and decisions affect their functioning in society and have an impact on others that they come in contact with. Targeted Content Standards and Benchmarks National Social Studies/Language Arts Standards: • Students should understand how culture and experience influence people’s perceptions of places and regions • Students adjust their use of spoken, written, and visual language to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences and for different purposes. • Students develop respect for diversity in language use, dialects across cultures, ethnic groups, geographic regions, and social roles. • Students use spoken, written, and visual language to accomplish their own purposes Standards/SOC • Students will develop positive attitudes toward self as a unique and worthy person • Students will identify values, attitudes and beliefs • Students will learn to work cooperatively with others as a team member • Students will understand that school success is the preparation to make the transition from student to community member. Prerequisite Skills Students will need to be knowledgeable of the processes of journal writing skills. Basic Fundamental skills, reading comprehension and communication skills are expected. Assessment Summary Questioning occurs throughout the unit to assess student thinking and allow student reflection. Journal assists in keeping track of Individual student needs. These notes will also provide information on how well students understand certain concepts. Students will incorporate pictures of themselves, pictures of their family, and complete a collage about their likes and dislikes. Students will use self-reflection questions to help them think about their progress/struggles in learning. Students will be asked to keep a detailed journal about their daily activities. Students will write a letter to be able to communicate their feelings and receive feed-back from their peers. Students will pass their group project in the paper containing the learning they have learned throughout the discussions.
