The Atomic Theories and Models Talk Show
I. Objectives


To be able to accurately present the specific contributions of the different chemists
particularly Democritus, Aristotle, Ernest Rutherford, Neils Bohr, Eugen Goldstein and
Sir James Chadwick to the development and formulation of the atomic theory.
To emphasize and present the models of the atom proposed by the different chemists in a
different and entertaining way.
II. Theoretical Background
DEMOCRITUS- A Greek philosopher who discovered the Atomos now known as the atom, it
means that it cannot be cut. And he first proposed that everything is made from atoms. Also he
has described the atom as an indestructible material because he believes that it will remain and
will always be indestructible. His Atom model consists of a circle because back in the olden
times, they do not have any materials that can further analyze the existence of atoms; they just
merely rely on hypothesis and ideas.
ARISTOTLE- His theory dates back from 340 BCE, it simply states that all living things are
made-up of the four basic elements, air, earth, water, fire and my special element which compose
the stars is aither. Also matter has for qualities mainly dryness, hotness, coldness and wetness.
ERNEST RUTHERFORD- he simply have discovered the proton or the positively charged
particle inside the nucleus. In his atomic model, the atom is comprised of a single positive
nucleus surrounded by negative orbiting electrons. Also, it suggests that most of the mass of the
atoms are contained in the small nucleus and the rest of the atom is mostly empty space or
99.9%. This conclusions were derived from his experiment using gold foil with alpha particles
particularly Helium nuclei.
NEILS BOHR- he was credited for having the most accurate atomic theory of all. Bohr mainly
focused on the electron. He has made a model named the “Bohr-Sommerfeld Model” in which a
positively charged nucleus is surrounded by negative orbiting electrons. It is patterned from the
Solar System with electrostatic force providing attraction.
EUGEN GOLDSTEIN- his studies about the atom are derived from the experiments in Anode
Rays. Goldstein discovered the Canal Rays in 1886. Also the discovery which states that the
cathode rays were not the only rays that will move in the opposite direction of the electrons and
that the Canal Rays do the same. Canal Rays are positively charged protons and produced a
reddish light at the top of the tube and a green color when the electrons hit the sides of the tube.
This discovery led to the discovery of the proton.
SIR JAMES CHADWICK- He disagreed to the atom model of Rutherford in which the atom
has only protons in the nucleus. His study suggests that there are neutrons or particles which
contain no charge. Because of disbelief in Rutherford’s model, he modified it, Chadwick added
neutrons in nucleus to provide clear description. Also, he was credited for the discovery of the
neutron.

Results and Discussion
The students had a deeper understanding about the atomic theory of Democritus, Aristotle,
Ernest Rutherford, Eugen Goldstein, Neils Bohr and Sir James Chadwick through the creative
use of words and presentation techniques in a talks show. Attached here is the script of Group 2
inorder to show evidence that the students will learn the atomic theories easily in our talk show
because of our packed content and simple deliberation of lines with great impact.
LIVING the Chem Life
Marinelle: GOOD AFTERNOON, III-Pablo, Welcome to the freshest and best talk show of all.
Krizza: It is not only educational but fun and exciting!
Both Hosts: Welcome to “LIVING THE CHEM LIFE”
Marinelle: Ms. Martin, do you know how important is our show today? Yes?
Krizza: Yes, I know because we have very important guests who contributed much to Chemistry and
now I am getting the chills because I saw my IDOL Chemists!
Marinelle: Also, we will be focusing on how the Atomic Theory developed or progressed throughout the
years. Okay, Let us not prolong your anticipation. Let us welcome our first guest. Fresh from the grave!
Let us welcome Democritus from Greece!
Yusela: Hello! Where exactly am I today?
Krizza: Oh my gosh! You are here in our studio to explain to us how you have pioneered the formulation
of the Atomic Theory!
Yusela: Ah okay, I am just wondering because I thought I was in heaven. But now I am here, I will
explain to you my studies. I as a Greek philosopher discovered the Atomos now known as the atom, it
means that it cannot be cut. And I first proposed that everything is made from atoms. Also I have
described the atom as an indestructible material because I believe that it will remain and will always be
indestructible.
Marinelle: So, how about promoting your atom model?
Yusela: My Atom model consists of a circle because back in the olden times, we do not have any
materials that can further analyze the existence of atoms; we just merely rely on hypothesis and ideas.
Krizza: Thank You! Mr. Democritus! Now for our second guest, he is one of the most famous figures
around, he is known all-over the globe by the words “Greek Philosopher” and he is my darling, Aristotle!
Gabriel: Hello, everyone! Especially to you my darling (Points to Krizza).
Marinelle: So Mr. Aristotle, how about explaining to us your idea about the atom?
Gabriel: My theory dates back from 340 BCE, it simply states that all living things are made-up of the
four basic elements, air, earth, water, fire and my special element which compose the stars is aither. Also
matter has for qualities mainly dryness, hotness, coldness and wetness.
Marinelle: Being the teacher of Alexander the Great, you are wise but your theory after past centuries has
been proven wrong. What can you say about that?
Gabriel: What? I am not updated. So, the atomic theory has progressed throughout the years hasn’t it?
Maybe because of the lack of technological progression, I wasn’t able to figure-out the correct hypothesis.
Krizza: Thank You! Mr. Aristotle. Now moving-on, let us welcome MR. Ernest Rutherford fresh from
the grave!
Reynan: Good Afternoon, ladies and gentlemen! Today, I have the task to explain to you my atomic
theory! I simply have discovered the proton or the positively charged particle inside the nucleus.
As you can see from my atomic model, the atom is comprised of a single positive nucleus
surrounded by negative orbiting electrons. Also, it suggests that most of the mass of the atoms are
contained in the small nucleus and the rest of the atom is mostly empty space or 99.9%. This conclusions
were derived from my experiment using gold foil with alpha particles particularly Helium nuclei.
Marinelle: Thank you Mr. Ernest Rutherford for that wonderful talk and explanation about your atomic
model and theory.
Reynan: No problem, I am very intelligent anyway.
Krizza: Okay let us now proceed to the Atomic theory of Mr. Neils Bohr!
Moises: Hey Guys. Let us now discuss my theory about the atom. Now, I am credited for having the most
accurate atomic theory of all. I mainly focused on the electron. I have made a model named the “BohrSommerfeld Model” in which a positively charged nucleus is surrounded by negative orbiting electrons. It
is patterned from the Solar System with electrostatic force providing attraction.
As you can see from the picture, there are many circles that surround the nucleus. These circles are the
orbits in which the electrons go around. Every orbit has a specific number of electrons. I have also
concluded that the number of electrons determine the mass of an element.
Marinelle: So, who is Sommerfeld and how did you work together to form your model?
Moises: Well, he is my close friend. Arnold Sommerfeld. We have worked together to make an accurate
model of an atom.
Krizza: Thank you! Mr. Neils Bohr! Please give a round of applause to Mr. Eugen Goldstein in
explaining to us his model about the atom.
Elaila: Thank You very much! Let me introduce myself, I am Eugen Goldstein. My studies about the
atom are derived from the experiments in Anode Rays. I discovered the Canal Rays in 1886. Also the
discovery which states that the cathode rays were not the only rays that will move in the opposite
direction of the electrons and that the Canal Rays do the same. Canal Rays are positively charged protons
and produced a reddish light at the top of the tube and a green color when the electrons hit the sides of the
tube. This discovery led to the discovery of the proton.
As you can see from the picture, the Anode rays produce Canal rays. Also, my study has foundout that electrons must have contained protons inorder to produce such negative attractions.
Marinelle: Now for our final guest who has made significant contributions in discovering the neutron.
Let us welcome the reincarnation of Sir James Chadwick!
Jamie: Hello, from you talk with Mr. Rutherford a while ago, I beg to disagree that the atom has only
protons in the nucleus. My study suggests that there are neutrons or particles which contain no charge.
Because of disbelief in Rutherford’s model, I modified it, I added neutrons in nucleus to provide clear
description. Also, I have discovered the neutron.
Marinelle: Thank You for that talk. If John Dalton and Joseph John Thompson didn’t decline our
request, they would also be here explaining their models of the atom.
Krizza: But setting that aside, it was a privilege meeting the people who developed the Atomic Theory!
Marinelle: Yup that is Right! Before wrapping-up the show we would like to thank our sponsors

Conclusion
We conclude that the atomic theory had developed throughout the years and had various
milestones with the aid of countless chemists who devoted their time in studying the atomic
structure and formulating atomic models. Ernest Rutherford discovered the proton, Neils
Bohr focused on the electron, Sir James Chadwick discovered the neutron, Eugen Goldstein
discovered the behavior of protons and neutrons in Cathode and Anode Rays, Democritus
concluded that the atom is an indestructible material and all things are made of these and
lastly, Aristotle who developed a theory regarding that matter is made of fire, water, earth, air
and aither. All mentioned have made a great impact in science and their atomic structures and
models explain how the atom was observed from then up to now.
