What Is Treating Your Hallux Rigidus? Limited motion and pain? A Latin term meaning ‘rigid toe,’ Hallux Rigidus is a degenerative condition that results in a stiffening of the big toe, specifically the MTP joint at the base of the big toe. This affliction is accompanied by varying degrees of pain, sometimes even prior to the stiffening. Hallux Rigidus can be caused by: » Structural problems, such as flat feet or fallen arches » A recurring strain from running, stooping or squatting, or » A traumatic event, such as a severe stubbing ofthe toe. Inflammation of the joint and build up of hard tissue or spurs occur as the body attempts to protect the joint. This typically evolves into osteoarthritis. Symptoms These are a few of the primary symptoms: » Inability to comfortably bend the toe up or down » Pain when you push off with your toes » Swelling around the joint » A bump forming at the top of the joint BEFORE The Importance of Early Detection As with most arthritic conditions, early detection, diagnosis and treatment of Hallux Rigidus is the most effective means of lessening its symptoms. Because Hallux Rigidus is a progressive degenerative condition and limits movement, discomfort will worsen if left untreated. Treatment for Mild to Moderate Cases For mild to moderate cases of Hallux Rigidus, your surgeon may recommend treatment options that reduce inflammation and lessen the pain or stop the condition from progressing. Often these are merely temporary alternatives. These non-surgical treatments may include: » Shoe modifications – Shoes with toe cavities that put less pressure on your toe, or specially-designed shoes that change the dynamics (rocker bottom). » Orthotics – Custom orthotic devices designed to improve foot function. » Medications – Oral and injected medicine Intended to help reduce pain and inflammation. Severe Cases May Require Surgical Intervention In cases where the bone condition is deteriorating, when spurs or bone build up and the inflammation/ pain is more severe, surgery is the only way to eliminate or reduce pain. There are several types of surgery for treatment of hallux rigidus, depending upon the specific severities of your case: » Cheilectomy – A procedure that removes spurs or lip of bone which form as a result of arthritis of the joint, lessening the stiffness in the joint. » Arthrodesis – This is a surgical procedure that fuses the bones together as one. Damaged cartilage is removed and pins, screws, and/or a plate fix the joint in a permanent position that will not bend. » Arthroplasty – Joint replacement surgery is utilized when patients desire continued flexibility and movement of the toe. In this procedure, one or both joint surfaces are modified or augmented and a partial joint implant or complete joint replacement is applied. Choosing the Best Solution Your physician will select and recommend the best remedy for your condition, based AFTER on the severity of your symptoms, your age, x-ray information, your level of activity and other pertinent factors. When All the Conditions Are Right There is a special arthroplasty that minimizes pain and restores range of motion. This procedure uses the Metatarsal Decompression Implant in addition to cleaning spurs or impinging bone growth that is affecting the joint.
