Causes of the civil war
• Religious (Catholics, Puritans, Protestants, Presbyterians…)
• Economic (Church, Nobility, Gentry, class of Yeomen,
Merchants, Poor…)
• Political (King, Parliament, Freedom, Rights, Law…)
• Nationalistic (England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland…)
• Private (men and women, the eternal question of Adam and
Eve…)

Economic causes
• the interests of the classes were very different
• we will see the contrast between Cromwell, a
gentleman, Lord Fairfax and the King, who
belong to the nobility, Mr. Holles, a
merchant…
Politic causes
• James I believed in a new theory called the
Divine Right of Kings, which held that kings
could do what they liked and were answerable
only to God. He even said that ‘Kings are justly
called gods’, which was news to the English
• There were no rights for many people
• England didn’t have a Constitution, only Magna
Charta and some medieval rights
• You will see people struggling in name of
freedom
Nationalistic causes
• During the English civil war (or the British civil
war) everyone struggled against everyone
• Scotland and Ireland were sometimes with the
King sometimes against him
Men and women
• Therefore, a revolution is made by men.
• And by women
• Sometimes passion is an x-factor very
important in history
• you will see how much lady Fairfax was
appreciated by everyone
