CHAD casualty (ER) In my future career, I hope to be able to provide more cost-effective and cost-conscious care to patients, as they do in the CHAD hospital and throughout CMC. NICU at CMC I also hope to be able to recognize when interventions are appropriate, and to learn how to let nature take its course gracefully. (This baby is fine. There were others that the staff chose not to intervene on due to likely futility or poor quality of life.) Free Leprosy Medications at Kaligiri I hope to be conscious of the financial and emotional burdens that diseases put on patients. Leprosy patients often didn’t seek treatment (in the past) in India due to the social stigma of having the disease, even though the medications were free. Now that they can receive care at a PCP or dermatologist office, they are more likely to do so. A rehab patient at CMC Our patients were incredibly generous and grateful: this man had a spinal cord injury over 20 years ago, and was grateful to be alive and to be wheeling himself around. He generously granted my request for a picture, too. A traditional “thali” (meal) Meals—whether at a restaurant or in someone’s home—were large. It’s impossible to get out of India without a full stomach! Being a Tourist: The Taj Mahal The Taj Mahal, the mausoleum of Memtas Mahal, the favorite wife of the fifth Mughal Emperor, Shah Jahan. Being a Tourist: Varanasi/the Ganges Tourists on boats in the Ganges at the Ganga Aarti ceremony in Varanasi, a Hindu holy city. Being a Tourist: Sarnath (the Buddha) A statue of the Buddha and a 32 spoke wheel in Sarnath, where Siddhārtha Gautama first preached the Four Noble Truths.
