Types of suffering in God’s Word*
suffering for glory of God
John 9:1 As He passed by, He saw a man blind from birth.
2 And His disciples asked Him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man
or his parents, that he would be born blind?" 3 Jesus
answered, "It was neither that this man sinned, nor his parents;
but it was so that the works of God might be displayed in him.
5
"While I am in the world, I am the Light of the world."
6 When He had said this, He spat on the ground, and made
clay of the spittle, and applied the clay to his eyes,

Types of suffering in God’s Word
suffering for our growth
James 1:2 Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you
encounter various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith
produces endurance.
Romans 5:3 And not only this, but we also exult in our
tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about
perseverance; 4 and perseverance, proven character; and
proven character, hope;
1 Peter 1:6 In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a
little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various
trials, 7 so that the proof of your faith, being more precious
than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may
be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the
revelation of Jesus Christ;
4
Types of suffering in God’s Word
suffering due to our identification with Christ
Philippians 1:29 For to you it has been granted for Christ's
sake, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake,
Colossians 1:24 Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake,
and in my flesh I do my share on behalf of His body, which is
the church, in filling up what is lacking in Christ's afflictions.

Types of suffering in God’s Word
suffering so that we comfort others
2 Corinthians 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our
Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all
comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our affliction so that we
will be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with
the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.
How are we comforted ?
see Rom 15:4-5
6
Types of suffering in God’s Word
suffering to prevent exalting of self
2 Corinthians 12:7 Because of the surpassing greatness of
the revelations, for this reason, to keep me from exalting
myself, there was given me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger
of Satan to torment me—to keep me from exalting myself!

Who is there to harm you if you prove zealous for
what is good?
Who is there to harm you
harm - kakoō- to harm or do evil to someone,
ill-treat, plague, injure
see Acts 18:10
If – 3rd class conditional sentence – presents the
condition as uncertain of fulfillment, but still likely
Lit: if you prove zealous and you probably will

13
Who is there to harm you if you prove zealous for
what is good?
you prove – ginomai – to come into a new state of being
Lit: you become
Romans 6:5 For if we have become united with
Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we
shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection,
zealous – the word is, lit., "a zealot" - "an uncompromising
partisan.” see Titus 2:14
for what is good – lit: of the good
Matthew 19:17a And He said to him, "Why are you asking
Me about what is good? There is only One who is good;

Observations on verse 13:
Peter tells them that as a result of their righteous
lives and God's care, their blessedness will be such
as to turn off all the malice of their persecutors and
make their suffering itself to be a joy. (Wuest)
How is it possible, however, to say that a believer
who is suffering (as these were) cannot be hurt?
The answer lies back in I Peter 1:6-7. Testing refines
faith. Does testing and suffering hurt us or help us,
then? (McCalley)

But even if you should suffer for the sake of
righteousness, you are blessed. AND DO NOT FEAR
THEIR INTIMIDATION, AND DO NOT BE TROUBLED,
But even if you should suffer for the sake of righteousness
But – alla – in strong contrast
even if you should suffer
If – 3rd class conditional sentence – presents the
condition as uncertain of fulfillment, but still likely
suffer - paschō - to be affected by something from without, to be
acted upon. It almost always denotes an unpleasant or hurtful
experience of some kind.
but suffer is in the “optative mood” which is used to introduce
something that is possible but not probable

But even if you should suffer for the sake of
righteousness, you are blessed. AND DO NOT FEAR
THEIR INTIMIDATION, AND DO NOT BE TROUBLED,
for the sake of righteousness
1 Peter 2:19 For this finds favor, if for the sake of conscience
toward God a person bears up under sorrows when suffering
unjustly.
you are blessed
James 5:11 We count those blessed who endured. You have
heard of the endurance of Job and have seen the outcome of
the Lord's dealings, that the Lord is full of compassion and is
merciful.

But even if you should suffer for the sake of
righteousness, you are blessed. AND DO NOT FEAR
THEIR INTIMIDATION, AND DO NOT BE TROUBLED,
This is a quotation from Isa. 8:12-13
AND DO NOT FEAR THEIR INTIMIDATION
do not be affected with fear of them
by the fear which they strive to inspire in you (Wuest)
AND DO NOT BE TROUBLED,
neither become agitated (Wuest)
