Relation- a rule that determines how a value of the independent
variable corresponds
Cartesian coordinate system, table, ordered pairs or mapping are all
ways to graph the data.
Domain- the input set, largest possible set of values for the
independent variable
Range- the output set, set of resulting values for the dependent
variable.
Function- a correspondence between two sets, X and Y, in which
each element of set X corresponds to exactly one element of set Y.
Function Value- For each value of x in the domain, the corresponding
unique value of y in the range.
Function Notation/Mapping Notation- Used to define a function.
2 Example Problems
• State the domain and range for: {(-3, 5),
(-2,5), (-1,5), (0,5), (-2,5) (2,5)}
• Answer: domain: {-3,-2,-1,0,2} range:
{5}
• Determine the domain of: y = • -2x + 3 ⩾ 0
• -2x ⩾ -3
• 2x ⩽ 3
• Answer = x ⩽ 3/2
√(-2x + 3)

1. Find the domain of each of the following functions.
[(-6,-3), (-1,0), (2,3), (3,0), (5,4)]
Domain = {-6, -1, 2, 3, 5} because the Domain consists of the x values
of a function
2. Consider function g(x) = √(x+4)
g(7)
g(7) = √(7+4) = √(11) = 3.32
Story Problem
• The Cactus Shadows DECA Club is in
charge of the football concession stand
for home games all season.Their goal is
to make $250 a game. They charge
$2.00 for beverages and $1.00 for
candy. What are some number pairs for
the beverages and candies that need to
be sold to reach the goal each game.
