Metamorphic Rock BY: GABE How metamorphic rock form and what they are used for. Metamorphic rock is caused by heat and pressure that causes the rock to undergo changes in composition. These rocks can be different shapes, sizes, and colors. They are used for: jewlery, buildings, and powders. They are important to our world. Jewelry made with metamorphic rock This is a neck lace made out of metamorphic rock. Here is a geode slice. How igneous changes into metamorphic rock What happens is the igneous rock sinks into the earth and gets hot witch makes metamorphic rocks. Two types of metamorphic rock You can see this is foliated because of the cracks. These are nonfoliated because they are used for building. Foliated texture When mineral grains flatten and line up in parallel bands, the metamorphic rock has foliated texture. Foliated rocks form when minerals in the original rock flatten under pressure. Nonfoliated texture In some metamorphic, rock no banding occurs. The mineral grains change, grow, and rearrange but they don’t form bands. This process produces a nonfoliated texture. Types of metamorphic rocks The original rocks are: slate. That is it. The “coping” rocks are : gneiss (really granite), slate (really shale), quartzite (really sandstone), and marble (really limestone). Alps, Rockys, and Himalayas Do you know what these mountains all have in common: they are all MOSTLY made of metamorphic rock. Whey the mountains are like that is they were formed by folding and all the sedimentary and igneous rock were eroded away leaving only metamorphic. FUN FACT Did you know that scientists can tell what a metamorphic rock used to be by studying the minerals inside it? the end!!!!! THANKS FOR WATCHING!
