7/8th Grade Choir NAME__________________________ Quarter 1 Vocabulary Words & Definitions/Memorize for quiz & test which will take place during 1st quarter. 1. quarter note ( ) = equals one beat 2. Quarter rest = 1 beat of silence 3. Barline = those vertical lines that go through the staff to separate them into measures. 4. Measure=The space between the barlines upon which music is written. 5. Time Signature=(sometimes called a meter signature) is the set of numbers at the beginning of a piece of music. (Ex. ¾ , 4/4, 6/4, 2/4, etc.) 4= top number indicates the number of beats per measure. (4 = 4 beats per measure 4= bottom number indicates the kind of note that receives one beat. (4 = quarter note gets one beat) 6. Staff=a series of five horizontal lines and four spaces on which notes are written. 7. Pitch=Notes are placed on staff to indicate pitch, or how high or low each note sounds. 8. Clef=the symbol at the beginning of the staff that indicates which lines and spaces represent which notes. 9. Treble = A clef that generally indicates notes that sound higher that Middle “C” ( ) 10.
