Prince Henry the Navigator
Teacher and Explorer of West Africa
Portugal, 1441
Prince Henry was born into the royal family of Portugal. Portugal is next to Spain and close to western Africa.
During the 1400s, Prince Henry sponsored (paid for) 50 explorations along the coast of Africa, but he never went on a single expedition himself. Patron? Even so, he was nicknamed "Prince Henry the Navigator."
