Course Description
This challenging 20th Century World History course is the first year of the International Baccalaureate history
program. Students will be required to complete two papers (exams in May) and an Internal Assessment if they are
pursuing standard level history (taking History only in the junior year) and three externally graded papers (exams in
May) and an Internal Assessment if they are pursuing higher level history (taking History both junior and senior
year).
ASSESSMENTS
Paper 1 is a document-based exam. Students must answer all four questions from the prescribed subject. In this
course we will study Prescribed Subject #2) The Arab-Israeli conflict 1945-79. Students will take the exam for
Prescribed Subject #2.
Paper 2 requires students to write two essays on two 20 th century world history topics. In this course students will
focus on the following three topics: IB Topic #1) Causes, practices and effects of war; IB Topic #3) Origin and
development of authoritarian single-party states and IB Topic #5) The Cold War.
Paper 3 is the senior year course of study comparing Latin America with the United States from the colonial period
through the Cold War.
Internal Assessment
Students are also required to complete an historical investigation to be internally assessed by their junior year history
teachers. This requirement is 20% of their IB history diploma grade.
Required Testing/Projects
All junior level history students are required to take the AP European History Exam offered at Lincoln Park High
School in May. Students must purchase an AP Review book. Students who perform satisfactorily on the exam will
have the opportunity to receive credit from one of the approximately 2,900 universities worldwide that recognize AP
coursework. Students at the standard level will be required to take the IB standard level exam offered at Lincoln
Park High School in May. Standard level students will sit for the paper 1 and paper 2 essay exams only.
Homework Binder
Students will be required to complete daily homework assignments that will be kept in a yearly binder. This binder
will become a crucial study tool for the IB exams. The binder should be organized by the two IB papers and
subdivided by topics of study. An additional section should be devoted to AP European History review materials.
Students should also have a section for daily class notes/reflection.
Homework Assignments
Each night reading is assigned. Students will complete the reading and write and answer in paragraph form three
IB-style questions that they write themselves from that night’s reading (1 page). One night a week, students will
write a short essay answering a question that they write themselves from that night’s reading (1 page).

Academic Dishonesty
Academic dishonest occurs when students obtain or assist others in obtaining credit for work which is not their own,
or when a student gains an unfair advantage on a test, paper, project or other assignment. Students committing
academic dishonesty will receive a zero on the assignment and parents will be notified. Further disciplinary action
such as detention, in-school suspension, and out of school suspension may ensue. Common examples of academic
dishonesty include, but are not limited to, using hidden notes, copying from another student, or helping another
student during a test; giving of questions or answers to a member of a later class or receiving test questions or
answers from a member of an earlier class; stealing or copying another students’ assignment, paper, project or test;
permitting another to copy one’s assignment, paper, project or test; falsely claiming illness or other excusable
absence to delay taking a test or turning in a paper, project, or assignment; falsely claiming illness or other excusable
absence to miss other classes in order to study or complete an assignment, paper, or project; using professional help
such as an author, expert, or purchased service, unless authorized by the teacher, and presenting material taken from
another source without adequate or appropriate documentation. Academic dishonesty is taken very seriously at
Lincoln Park High School and will not be tolerated.

IB 20th Century History Binder Instructions
All class materials should be kept in one large 3-ring binder. Nothing should be stored in such a way that it can fall
out of the binder. The binder should be organized by the two IB papers and subdivided by topics of study. An
additional section should be devoted to AP European History review materials. Within some subsections students
may also wish to further divide their work by book. Each section should also be divided into homework (questions,
essays,) kept in chronological order by due date, daily class notes, handouts, and exams. Students do have the
option of keeping daily class notes in a separate spiral notebook. Miscellaneous other items may be filed where the
student sees fit.
