RWE Dea Press release Grammar school Domgymnasium Verden and RWE Dea plan to make natural gas topics an exciting subject for students Verden, 28.08.2007, RWE Dea The foundations for cooperation between the grammar school Domgymnasium Verden and Hamburg’s RWE Dea AG have been laid. The partners agreed today to make a concerted effort to promote applied natural sciences and to use practical contacts to stimulate the students’ interest in occupations in the field of exploration and production of natural gas and crude oil. This cooperative venture is part of a junior talent promotion project launched by the Association of German Crude Oil and Natural Gas Enterprises (WEG). This program is under the auspices of Minister-President Christian Wulff and was devised in cooperation with the participating schools and the Ministry of Education of Lower Saxony. Background: the burgeoning demand for energy is leading to increased requirements as regards exploration and production of natural gas and crude oil. To be able to master the challenges of the future, the companies engaged in this sector require a highly qualified workforce. “Enterprises like RWE Dea can offer dedicated young people attractive employment conditions in an innovative and forward-looking industry”, says the Head of Corporate Communication at RWE Dea AG, Uwe-Stephan Lagies. “The Domgymnasium would like to make a contribution toward inspiring more young people to consider technical jobs in the field of natural sciences. We consider this an immense opportunity to organize practice-oriented and exciting lessons in cooperation with the company RWE Dea. The newly created seminar subject in Lower Saxony is highly suitable for this purpose,” says the school’s principal, Detlev Lehmann, who is delighted with this new challenge. As part of the pilot project which, in addition to the Verden project, also comprises three further cooperative ventures between industry and selected schools in Lower Saxony, training material is being developed for the new seminar subject in the senior grades. These seminars are intended to give students an opportunity to acquaint themselves with topics to do with natural gas and crude oil production and to find out how technical engineering activities based on the theory of natural sciences are put into daily practice in real life. To this end, RWE Dea offers guided tours of its facilities, internships for students and teachers, active participation by employees of operations on site in project work as well as financial support for equipment and materials. If the one-year pilot phase proves to be successful, then the association project is to be extended to include other schools. More than 95 per cent of domestic natural gas is produced in this state. Production by RWE Dea in the area between the Elbe and Weser rivers amounts to more than 2 billion cubic meters of natural gas per annum. This makes RWE Dea one of the major gas producers in Germany.
