In general Latvian society is tolerant of different religions and open to new religious ideas. The main religion traditionally practised in Latvia is Christianity. MAIN RELIGIONS IN LATVIA Lutheranism, Catholicism, Russian Orthodox, Old Believer communities. LUTHERANISM The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Latvia has 450,000 members. Historically, the west and central parts of the country have been predominantly Protestant. The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Latvia is a member of the Lutheran World Federation, the World Council of Churches and the Conference of European Churches. LUTHERANISM The Church is governed by a Consistory composed of clergy and laity elected by the synod. The Archbishop serves as its president. The east part of Latvia – particularly the Latgale region – has been predominantly Catholic. The Roman Catholic Church of Latvia is part of the worldwide Roman Catholic Church, under the spiritual leadership of the Pope and curia in Rome. CATHOLICISM Latvian Roman Catholics own the world famous holy shrine – the Aglona Basilica. 1980 – the church was officially given the status of a Basilica by Pope John Paul II. The Latvian Orthodox Church is a self-governing Eastern Orthodox Church under the jurisdiction of the Patriarchate of Moscow. It has 350,000 members. Orthodoxy predominates among the Latvian Russian population. RUSSIAN ORTHODOX OLD BELIEVER COMMUNITIES The community of Old Believers is one of the most integrated religious and ethnic groupings in Latvia. The term 'Old Belief' refers to the churches and religious communities that do not recognize the reforms launched in the Russian Orthodox Church in the 17th century by Patriarch Nikon. OLD BELIEVER COMMUNITIES The Old Believers traditionally cross themselves with two fingers, and they recognized only pre-reform icons, liturgical books and observances, and the eightarmed cross. OLD BELIEVER COMMUNITIES The first congregations of Old Believers started to live in Latgale, former Polish-Lithuanian territory in the 17th century. DIEVTURI It is a Neopagan religious movement, which claims to be a modern revival of the folk religion of the Latvians before Christianization in the 13th century. Dievturi means in Latvian "those who hold by God". Dievturi take care of folk education, hold religious services and praise meetings, and also conduct ceremonies at festivities and rites of passage - birth, coming of age, marriage and funeral, issuing the appropriate certificates as well. DIEVTURI Dievturība started in 1925 and is primarily based on Latvian folklore, old folk songs - dainas and mythology. Approximately 650 persons are officially active members of Dievturi movement. DIEVTURI DIEVTURI – calendar of the year Jāņi – summer solstice. It is seed- time and hay time. Miķeļi – autumn solstice. Autumn time and soul of the dead time. Ziemassvētki (Christmas) – winter and ice time. Lieldaienas (Easter) – spring time and frozen snow time. Thank you for attention!
