New Dentures Advice Sheet
Wearing new dentures can be extremely difficult and will take time and effort on your part.
To get used to you dentures, you need to wear them as much as possible. DO NOT wear
your dentures overnight (unless advised by your dentist). Do not expect too much too soon.
EATING-:
To begin with, cut your food into small pieces and eat food that requires little chewing. You
may find that food goes under the dentures at first. Try and chew on both sides at the same
time
SPEAKING-:
At first you may find speech a little difficult. Usually this will improve within the first few
days
DISCOMFORT-:
You may experience discomfort when your dentures are fitted, this is quite normal. If you
have only a small amount of discomfort, try and cope with this until you see your dentist
again. If you have severe discomfort, take the new dentures out and put your old ones in for a
few days. However, on the two days before your next visit to the dentist, put the new ones
back in. This will help your dentist to find and treat the problem. If you are extremely worried
about the amount of discomfort you are having or are having discomfort but do not have
another appointment, contact the Dental Practice
LOOSENESS-:
Initially, your dentures may feel a little loose until you adapt to there new shape. In most
people, this improves with time.
CLEANING YOUR DENTURES -:
Your dentures may accumulate food debris, stain and tartar so keeping them clean is
important. You should clean them regularly after each meal using a SOFT BRUSH and
SOAP. Your dentures should be IMMERSED overnight in LUKEWARM water containing a
tablet (or powder) of an alkaline peroxide denture cleanser, e.g. Milton, Steradent. Some
brands of denture cleaner are unsuitable if you have metal based dentures (ask your dentist).
IMMEDIATE DENTURES -:
These are dentures which are fitted to replace your natural teeth immediately after their
extraction. They are fitted as a temporary measure until the extraction area heals fully –
shrinkage of the bone occurs post extraction. It is normally required to reline or remake the
denture 3 to 6 months after fitted.
