UB Student's Filtering Device for Used Cooking Oil Grabs International Awards Submit by prasetyaFTon September 09, 2016| Comment(s) : 0| View : 2350 Zuvier Purify Oil Filter created by Faculty of Engineering students Students of Faculty of Engineering of University of Brawijaya do not stop to work and innovate. Recently a combined student of Mechanical Engineering Department and Chemical Engineering Department creates a useful device to refine used cooking oil to become worth taking oil. A device so-called Zuvier Purify Oil Filter was successfully to grab an award in form of Gold medals in an international competition named "The 3rd International Young Inventors Award (IYIA)", held by Indonesian Invention and Innovation Promotion Association (INNOPA) at Surabaya Convention Hall for three days (6-8/Sep/2016). The Zuvier Purify Oil Filter which consists of Indra Barani (Mechanical Engineering), Sofia Afifah A. (Chemical Engineering), Yuyun Drupadi A.A. (Chemical Engineering), Mohammad Rizal Fauzi (Chemical Engineering), Linggar Gara Putra S. (Mechanical Engineering), and Neila Nabilah (Chemical Engineering) was supervised by Ir. Bambang Poerwadi, MS. Faculty of Engineering students grab gold medal at IYIA IYIA competition itself followed by around 100 teams at various levels including Elementary School, Junior High School, Senior High School and universities across the world like Malaysia, Thailand, The Philipines, Taiwan, South Korea, China, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Romania, Croatia, the United States of America and Canada. In the device working process, the team was divided into two groups. The Chemical Engineering team had a research to change used cooking oil into worth taking oil. Meanwhile the mechanical engineering team was assigned to design the device, creating automation device, device coding and device concept. "We analyze what kind of adsorbent which able to absorb FFA saturated fat which contained in used cooking oil and so the distillates could be used again," said Sofia, the coordinator of Chemical Engineering team. Sofia pursued, the team's research product has tested in the food quality and safety testing laboratory of Faculty of Agricultural Technology of Brawijaya University. The test result also indicates satisfying and fulfilling Indonesian National Standard results. "We also analyze any ingredients that proper and cause no harm when being used," she added. Meanwhile, Indra Barani as Mechanical Engineering team coordinator explained that Zuvier Purify Oil Filter working principle consists of three mechanisms including heating, stirring and filtering. The three process cores are then combined into 6 parts at which of each are placed in different containers. In filtering process at the first stage, the used cooking oil will be filtered out of impurities from the frying process in form of solids. After filtered, the vacuum pump will light up and so oil of the first filter will flow into the second one. "In the second filter, there is a heating process until the oil temperature reaches 150°C. It is used to eliminate water, since in the temperature of 100°C water will change its phase," he explained. In the second filter, there is a temperature sensor in form of thermocouple. Form the sensor, condition in the filter could be controlled. After the temperature reaches 150°C, vacuum pump will return to light up again for pumping oil from the second filter into the third one. And afterwards, solenoid will be automatically opened or closed as programmed which has created based on temperature sensor. Then in the third, fourth and fifth filter, there is a heating process and stirring for an hour in 150°C. "Delay in each process, we set for two seconds and vacuum will work for 2 minutes, in the third filter there is a zeolite which functioned to eliminate saturated fat level," he explained. Furthermore, in the fourth filter there is active charcoal which functioned as ingredient which able to eliminate metal content in saturated oil. And in the fifth filter there is a bentonite as oil refiner in terms of colour. "In the third, fourth and fifth filter all processes are similar, it's just different materials inside, and then the sixth filter is the product which filtered back and so the oil produced is really clean of solids," he ended.
