Effect of maternally-derived antibodies on the performance and immunity of broilers induced by in
ovo or post-hatching immunizations with a live vaccine against infectious bursal disease

The interference of low or high maternal antibodies titers on the attenuated infectious bursal disease (IBD) virus (IBDV) vaccine
infection and its effects on the performance of broilers vaccinated at the 18th day of incubation (in ovo), at one day of age
(subcutaneously-SC), or at 15 days of age (drinking water-DW) were investigated. After a series of three live vaccinations,
breeders were given or not an IBD oil emulsion vaccine (IBD-OEV) prior to sexual maturity. At day 18 of incubation (in ovo), a
commercial vaccine containing HVT and an intermediate IBDV strain or the single HVT vaccine was given. An intermediate
IBDV vaccine was given SC at one day of age, or at 15 days of age via DW. The progeny of unvaccinated breeders presented
higher neutralizing...

The Infectious Bursal Disease Virus (IBDV) causes immunosuppression in young chickens. Advances in molecular virology and
vaccines for IBDV have been achieved by viral reverse genetics (VRG). VRG for IBDV has undergone changes over time,
however all strategies used to generate particles of IBDV involves multiple rounds of amplification and need of in vitro ligation
and restriction sites. The aim of this research was to build the world's first VRG for IBDV by yeast-based homologous
recombination; a more efficient, robust and simple process than cloning by in vitro ligation. The wild type IBDV (Wt-IBDV-Br)
was isolated in Brazil and had its genome cloned in pJG-CMV-HDR vector by yeast-based homologous recombination. The
clones were transfected into chicken...

In order to identify and characterize the agent of a suggestive clinical case of Gumboro disease (GD) that affected a 34-day-old
broiler flock in Buriti Alegre (Goias State, Midwestern Brazil) in the year 2001, we carried out a combination of classic and
modern virological methods. Histopathological analysis of the bursa revealed necrosis, presence of depleted follicles, some
infiltration of heterophils, edema and formation of cystic cavities that are compatible with lesions observed in GD. Inoculation of
embryonated eggs of specific pathogen-free (SPF) chickens with macerated bursa suspension resulted in embryo mortality and
lesions which were also compatible with those caused by IBDV. A sample of bursa was submitted to a nested reverse...

Investigation on Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV), Infectious Bursal Disease Virus (IBDV) and Avian
Poxvirus (APV) in magellanic penguins in Southern region of Brazil

Fonseca; Castro,Clarissa Caetano; Fischer,Geferson; Vargas,Gilberto D'avila; Hübner,Silvia de Oliveira.
To investigate the exposure of the Newcastle disease virus (NDV), infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) and avian poxvirus
(APV) in Magellanic penguins found on the beaches in Southern regions of Brazil, the frequency of serum antibodies was
estimated in 89 samples taken during 2005 and 2006. All the penguins were negative for the presence of antibodies against NDV
by hemagglutination inhibition test and to APV by indirect ELISA. The reactivity was similar to the positives controls using
ELISA kit for the IBDV made in the chickens in 50 samples. This reactivity also was demonstrated in 42 samples using agar gel
immunodiffusion. No clinical signs related to IBDV infection were observed. The results indicated the absence of infection by
NDV and APV but...

Susceptibility of cell lines to avian viruses

Noronha; Arns,Clarice Weis.
The susceptibility of the five cell lines - IB-RS-2, RK-13, Vero, BHK-21, CER - to reovirus S1133 and infectious bursal disease
virus (IBDV vaccine GBV-8 strain) was studied to better define satisfactory and sensitive cell culture systems. Cultures were
compared for presence of CPE, virus titers and detection of viral RNA. CPE and viral RNA were detected in CER and BHK-21
cells after reovirus inoculation and in RK-13 cell line after IBDV inoculation and with high virus titers. Virus replication by
production of low virus titers occurred in IB-RS-2 and Vero cells with reovirus and in BHK-21 cell line with IBDV.
