Vocabulary: Chapter 9
1. Industrial Revolution: The shift, beginning in England during the 18th century, from making
goods by hand to making them by machine.
2. Enclosures: One of the fenced-in fields created by wealthy British landowners on land
that was formerly worked by village farmers.
3. Industrialization: The development of industries (factories) for the machine production
of goods.
4. Factors of Production: The resources- including land, labor, and capital (money)- that
are needed to produce goods and services.
5. Entrepreneur: A person who creates businesses. They organize, manage, and take on
the risk of the business.
6. Urbanization: The growth of cities and the migration of people into them.
7. Rural: A term relating to the countryside, country people or life, or agriculture.
8. Laissez Faire: The idea that government should not interfere with or regulate industries
and businesses.
9. Adam Smith: Believed in the economic system of capitalism (see #14) who wrote the
book The Wealth of Nations. He was very influential to the United States.
10. Capitalism: An economic system based on private ownership and on the investment of
money in business ventures in order to make a profit.
11. Utilitarianism: The idea that government actions are only useful if they promote the
greatest good for the greatest number of people.
12. Socialism: An economic system where the factors of production are owned by the
people and operate for the benefit of all.
13. Karl Marx: Author of the Communist Manifesto where he talked of hating the industrial
factories and believed that they were harmful to the factory workers and only allowed for the
factory owners to get rich. He called for a worker’s revolution.
14. Communism: An economic system in which all means of production (land, mines,
factories, railroads, and businesses) are owned by the people. Private property does not
exist and all goods and services are shared equally.
15. Unions: An organization of workers, formed to demand better working conditions and
higher pay.
16. Strike: To refuse to work in order to force an employer to meet certain demands.
