In 2002 the Church Meeting became particularly interested in the problems
that had been identified in the press, faced by some parents when trying to
find suitable pre-school facilities for their children. It was recognized that
Teignmouth was particularly badly served and that many people who wished
to return to work were prevented from doing so.
At the same time Church Members became aware of the need of some
employers in Teignmouth- particularly its largest employer, Corpdata
Limited- to have some pre-school nursery provision in the heart of the town
so that it could offer full and part time employment within the community. No
company owned spare facilities that could have provided a suitable venue for
such a nursery.
The church created a Charitable Trust and tasked the Trustees to create a
nursery for the community. There is no requirement for children or their
families to have any involvement with the Church, or with any particular
employer.

Parents as Partners
At East Teign Nursery we believe that parents are the first and main
educators and role models for their young children. In order to build a strong
foundation for each child it is important for both the Nursery and the parents
to work together in forming a stable relationship.
We are committed to keeping parents actively involved with their child’s
education and well being at our Nursery. This means maintaining regular
contact with their child’s key worker and a two way sharing of information and
support.
Providing it does not upset our children or curriculum, parents/carers are
welcome to spend time at East Teign Nursery if they are curious as to their
child’s progress, or if they just want to get a feel for our setting.
It is very important to keep us up to date with any changes that may affect
your child. Please inform us promptly of any medical conditions, illnesses,
physical or emotional difficulties of which you become aware.
You are your child’s first and constant educator and much of what
he/she learns takes place at home. Please see your child’s key worker
or any other member of staff or management at any time for a
consultation.

Starting
The first days
A child who is tense and unhappy will not play or learn properly, so it is
important that parents and Nursery staff work together to help the child feel
confident and secure within the group. This takes longer for some children
than others so parents should not be worried if their child takes a while to
settle. East Teign Nursery’s policy is always available on request.
You as a parent/carer know your child best therefore we welcome you to
bring your child along to East Teign Nursery prior to their start date. Parents
are also welcome to stay with their children for as long as they feel necessary
providing your stay does not affect the rest of the group. Please refer to East
Teign Nursery’s “Settling in” policy.
What to wear
In order to feel free and be able to experiment with all kinds of materials,
including messy ones, it is best to send children in clothes that are easily
washable or not too new.
It is good for children to practice the skills that make them independent.
Simple clothing which they can manage themselves will enable them to go to
the toilet when they need to and put on and take off their outdoor clothes
without being too dependant on other peoples help.
We hope that your child’s time at East Teign Nursery will be a happy and
productive one. If we can help in any other way please feel free to contact us
at any time.

Welfare
If your child is unwell at East Teign Nursery, we will make every effort to
contact you. It is extremely important that we have up to date phone numbers
for your home, mobile, work and emergency contact. Until we are able to
contact you we will take any action required in the interests and comfort of
your child.
Although we always care for children who become ill at Nursery, children on
short courses of medicines, such as antibiotics should not be attending
nursery.
Please do not send your child to East Teign Nursery if they are unwell or
have a contagious illness. Children have to be free from sickness and
diarrhoea for at least 48 hours before returning to Nursery. If children do
need to bring in medicines i.e. Inhalers, please make sure they are clearly
labeled with the child’s name and directions for use attached. You will be
required to sign our medication book before we can administer any kind of
medication. This needs to be prescribed by a doctor.
All medicines must be handed over to a member of staff, not left in children’s
bags or pockets.
Most of East Teign Nursery staff members are qualified in first aid and in the
event of any accident appropriate treatment will be carried out. In the case of
a more serious accident we will contact you immediately. Parents will always
be informed of accidents and required to sign our accident form (please refer
to “first aid” policy.

Policies and procedures
All of East Teign Nursery’s policies and procedures and designed to offer the
best possible care and experiences in our setting. The Nursery Manager and
Trustees will review each policy annually to ensure the best systems are
used throughout the Nursery. Below is an idea of the contents of our policies
and procedures but you will be required to read the “policy file prior to starting
at East Teign Nursery to be sure that you are happy with the systems in
place,
Special needs
At East Teign Nursery we welcome all adults and children. We strongly
believe that effective partnerships between parents/carers and staff are the
most productive way to work towards meeting all the children’s needs.
Therefore if a child has a specific need, specialist equipment, training and
advice will be sort from the appropriate organisations. If necessary a higher
staff: child ratio will be provided, where possible to ensure the children
receive the highest quality of education and care.
A child may have special educational needs (SEN) if they have a learning
difficulty, or physical disabilities, which call for special provisions to be made.
The Nursery’s SENCO (Special Educational Needs Co-coordinator) will
have regard to and comply with the “Code of Practice) at all times.
Equal Opportunities
East Teign Nursery is an Equal Opportunities Organisation and is committed
to anti-discriminatory practice and positively promotes and respects the
diverse society in which we live. We will provide books, pictures, toys and
equipment and create an environment that is non-discriminatory and reflects
the world around us. By providing this East Teign Nursery aims create a
harmonious, multicultural society within the Nursery.

Behaviour
We at East Teign Nursery believe that babies and children should be taught a
sense of right and wrong, to have mutual respect, develop caring personal
relationships and to have good manners. There will be positive
reinforcement of good behaviour through encouragement and praise and
through all staff being good role models at all times. Clear consistent
boundaries will be given to enable the child to understand the difference
between right and wrong.
Systems in place
Key workers
Our key worker system gives each member of staff particular responsibility
for just a few children out of the group. This ensures that each child and their
parent/carer has one specific person to relate to on a daily basis, which can
make settling in to East Teign Nursery much easier.
The key worker maintains strong links with each parent/carer through daily
discussions and shared record keeping, ensuring that the children are
supported in reaching their full potential at all times.
If a parent/carer has any questions or queries about their child’s progress
their first discussion should be with the nursery manager, Zoe Naish, at any
time.
Record Keeping
At East Teign Nursery we believe record keeping is essential to ensure the
staff and parents/carers are aware of their child’s progress. In reporting the
development and progress of each child we are able to devise an individual
curriculum, which can be encouraged both at home and in the setting.

Training
At East Teign Nursery we are constantly in touch with new thinking in the field
of child education and care. We receive a monthly magazine offering
practical advice and up to date information, and have access to
professionally produced publications.
In addition to this ongoing staff training is available for all staff members
through play lines and 0-14 (Early Years Development and Childcare
Partnership). This training covers a variety of areas including all of the seven
“Early learning Goals”, behaviour management, special needs and
awareness and much more.
Curriculum
Within the group each child is supported in developing their potential at their
own pace. Our key worker system enables us to provide a planned
curriculum tailored to the needs of each individual child. We aim to develop
each child by building on the skills they have already developed. We are able
to offer a curriculum designed to meet each child’s diverse needs in the
foundation years so that they will progress with confidence towards and
beyond the early years goals.

The Seven Area’s of Development
 Communication and Language Development involves giving
children opportunities to experience a rich language environment; to
develop their confidence and skills in expressing themselves; and to
speak and listen in a range of situations.
 Physical Development involves providing opportunities for young
children to be active and interactive; and to develop their co-ordination,
control, and movement. Children must also be helped to understand
the importance of physical activity, and to make healthy choices in
relation to food.
 Personal, Social and Emotional Development involves helping
children to develop a positive sense of themselves, and others; to form
positive relationships and develop respect for others; to develop social
skills and learn how to manage their feelings; to understand
appropriate behavior in groups; and to have confidence in their own
abilities.
 Literacy Development involves encouraging children to link sounds
and letters and to begin to read and write. Children must be given
access to as wide range of reading materials (books, poems and other
written materials) to ignite their interest.
 Mathematics involves providing children with opportunities to develop
and improve their skills in counting, understanding and using numbers,
calculating simple addition and subtraction problems; and to describe
shapes, spaces and measures.
 Understanding the World involved guiding the children to make
sense of their physical world and their community through
opportunities to explore, observe and find out about people, places,
technology and the environment.
 Expressive Arts and Design involves enabling children to explore
and play with a wide range of media and materials, as well as providing
opportunities and encouragement for sharing their thoughts, ideas and
feelings through a variety of activities in art, music, movement, dance,
role-play, and design and technology.
