Over time the layer of sand and mud at the
bottom of lakes and oceans turned into rocks
these are called sedimentary rocks
These little bits of our earth are washed
downstream where they settle to the bottom of
the rivers, lakes, and oceans. Layer after layer of
earth is deposited on top of each. These layers are
pressed down more and more through time, until
the bottom layers slowly turn into rock.
Sandstone, Limestone, Shale, Coal, and
Rock Salt
Sedimentary rocks are mostly found in lakes or
oceans. On the map at the bottom you can see
that most folks in the USA live where
sedimentary rocks are. They are found all over
the world

Many fossils are found in sedimentary rock.
Sedimentary rocks are usually formed in water.
Rocks fit into my life by building
roads to drive on so we can get from
place to place. Rocks also provide
certain minerals that help make
soap, toothpaste, and salt for our
food. Rocks are also used in
buildings to provide us with schools,
hospitals, and shelter.
