MILTIADES:
Athenian tyrant of the Chersonese; subject of the Persian
king Darius.
- 513: advised Ionians to desert Darius at the Danube during his
campaign against the Scythians. The other Ionian leaders
declined.
- 499: took part in the Ionian Revolt
- 493: escaped the Phoenician fleet, fled to Athens, where his
knowledge of Persian military tactics proved invaluable.
- 490: his advice re where to fight the Persians (Marathon) and
when to attack them vital to Athenian victory.
- Refer to Bradley p130, to Herodotus and Plutarch’s Lives for
details.
