SIGNS OF THE TIMES - N.M. May 15, 1999 (#70) Greetings from Russell's Remnant: Dr. Russell Whitesell encouraged his disciples to study symbols abstractly. He stated that the soul uses symbols to communicate with its charge. One set of astrological symbols are the Sabian symbols which were received by Elsie Wheeler and published by Marc Jones in his book - The Sabian Symbols in Astrology. Dane Rudhyar was urged to write about these symbols by Alice Bailey. The following statements on the Sabian Symbols were found in An Astrological Mandala by Dane Rudhyar: This book is to be used as a catalyst to deepen thinking. It is a book about “meaning.” Astrology is a language of symbols. The 360 Sabian symbols are words in a vast cosmic poem whose meaning transcends the often banal images visualized by the clairvoyant. Expressed through symbols, life becomes condensed into a relatively few interrelated units of experience. Human experience is essentially cyclic, and it unfolds according to structural principles. What counts, spiritually speaking, is the harvest of meanings a person is able to gather from these many and varied experiences. The Sabian symbols refer to the division of any cyclic life process into 360 phases. No symbol should be considered inherently negative. Astrology shows us the best, natural way of facing any situation in terms of our own nature. Marc Jones states that “the degrees which lie face to face across the circle will be found to complement each other in a fashion that is mutually illuminating, and this fact has been of the greatest assistance in working out the detailed symbolism. There are unlimited ways in which these Sabian symbols can be interpreted, and the practiced student or professional astrologer need not confine himself to any one mode of approach.” Symbols are units of cyclic time. The primary structure of a birth chart is defined by two axes perpendicular to each other, the horizon and the meridian. In an astrological chart these four questions can be related to the four Angles: Ascendant (WHAT), Descendant - (WHERETO) Nadir (HOW), Zenith (WHY). Cases can be significantly applied to a birth chart. What the symbols indicate is not so much what is as what should be developed in order that a person be fully able to actualize his birth potential. If one has the time to study a birth chart in depth, the consideration of the symbols of the degrees on which all the planets are located is certainly worthwhile. *** Dane Rudhyar is considered a thinking man’s astrologer. His books tend to be very deep, and often his astrology books did not find as large an audience as many of his fellow astrologers’ books did. An astrologer in Russell’s group often includes a Sabian symbol in his client’s chart. It is the symbol for the ascendant if the client indicates they are, or appear to have, aspirations of working with the Plan. It is the symbol for the Sun if they are living in the present, or it is the symbol for the moon if the person is living in the past - with an Atlantean or Lemurian consciousness. D.K. stated: A man's sun sign indicates his present problem, sets the tempo of his life and is related to the quality of his personality (rajasic or activity aspect of life). The ascendant or rising sign holds the secret of his future, and in its symbolism he can find the clue to his life problem and indicate what he can be and what he can achieve. It presents the type of force which will enable him to succeed (sattvic or harmony aspect of his life). The moon sign indicates the native's past. It summarizes the limitations and handicaps under which he must work (tamasic or inertia which holds you back).
